Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Gorilla trekking in Uganda takes place in two primary destinations: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: Located in southwestern Uganda, Bwindi is renowned for its dense rainforest and diverse wildlife. This park is home to approximately 15 habituated gorilla families, making it a key destination for gorilla trekking. The terrain can be challenging, with steep and muddy trails, but it offers a more remote and immersive experience. Bwindi is also known for its rich biodiversity, including over 350 bird species and numerous primates. The park’s name, “Impenetrable,” reflects its dense vegetation, but it’s this very density that provides a unique and thrilling trekking experience.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park: Situated in the Virunga Massif, which also includes Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and DR Congo’s Virunga National Park, Mgahinga offers a slightly different trekking experience. It is smaller than Bwindi and hosts only one habituated gorilla family, but the park’s scenic beauty, including views of three volcanic mountains, adds to its appeal. Trekking here involves less dense forest compared to Bwindi, which can make the experience somewhat less strenuous.

Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Rwanda’s gorilla trekking takes place in Volcanoes National Park, located in the country’s northwestern region. This park is renowned for its accessibility and stunning landscapes, including the majestic Virunga volcanoes. With about 150 habituated gorillas divided into ten groups, Volcanoes National Park offers a unique and relatively straightforward trekking experience. The park’s proximity to Kigali, approximately a 2.5-hour drive, makes it the easiest destination for those with limited time. Rwanda’s emphasis on high-end tourism is reflected in the luxurious lodges around the park. Although the permit cost of $1,500 is the highest among the gorilla trekking destinations, it provides a well-organized and safe experience. Visitors can also explore other activities, such as visiting Dian Fossey’s grave or climbing the volcanoes.
