GOP Meltdown! The Zombie Apocalypse Must Be Upon Us.
What was Mitt Romney and the “establishment" wing of the Republican Party thinking? Romney didn't just assault Donald Trump calling him a phony, a fraud and a laundry list of other pejorative names, he insulted the millions of new people who have have turned out for Trump, by claiming they have been suckered into voting for him.
There is no such thing as a perfect candidate, and I am certainly not defending Trump, he doesn't need my help. But, we warned if those who don't like Trump throw a match into this gasoline can they will cause more than a momentary explosion, they will be touching off civil war that will scorch the Republican Party. Where does Romney think all of those Trump voters will go if Mitt and his cohorts succeed in getting the GOP to dump the Donald? They are not likely to go running to the establishment politicians they hate so much.
Three years ago, the GOP did deep analysis about why it lost the 2012 Presidential election to a second term of Obama. The key conclusion was "the party must trust the voters to choose the GOP nominee," as opposed to the Party chieftains picking the anointed one. Now, the establishment wing of the Republican Party wants to turn on the candidate voters are choosing in large numbers? This is hypocrisy at best, suicide at worst. If you disregard the wishes of those Trump voters, beware of the results.
This is a mess. Republicans need a pow-wow and now. The Party leadership needs to gather every Republican governor and the establishment power brokers in an emergency meeting with Trump. Let Donald make his own case and help the political insiders find a way to work with the man who is more-likely-than-not to be the GOP nominee for President.

9 年Good article, Mike, and a great suggestion. The issue is, no "true" Republican candidate would be running a divisive campaign like Mr. Trump -- a campaign that will leave a mangled GOP in its wake. Since the beginning, Trump has run a race that would enable him to win the GOP while preventing him from winning the general. He purposely insults whole constituencies that will support Hillary Clinton. A socialist recently told me, in fact, that "Trump is the gift who keeps on giving." So why would Mr. Trump want to run a divisive campaign that is on track to divide and conquer the GOP? Many reasons that I won't go into here. Let's just say that, if the race comes down to Hillary versus Trump, America has been effectively checkmated.
