Dumont 1: GOOSE 0
Dumont vs THE GOOSE

Dumont 1: GOOSE 0

When I was a kid, I used to love reading in my neighbor’s tree house.?

Every day, I’d hop the fence and make my way to the tree, playing with their Belgian Shepard, King, along the way.

Hidden in my leafy paradise, I’d wile away the hours exploring new worlds and adventures.

Until the SUMMER OF THE GOOSE.

On the first day of summer vacation, I hopped the fence and started for the tree.

Suddenly a gray goose, the size of Godzilla, came tearing out of the doghouse and chased me across the grass, honking, hissing, and pecking at my back, legs, and heels.

It was terrifying – not to mention painful!

…but I wasn’t about to give up that tree.

It was DUMONT vs. THE GOOSE.

This required some thought.

The next morning, I toasted four slices of bread and made my way to the far side of the yard.

I threw two pieces of toast over the fence, and the goose went for it.

I ran to the other side of the yard, hopped the fence, and hauled ass towards that tree.

The goose chased after me, but I had too much of a head start for it to catch me.

Hah!

Dumont: 1???????GOOSE: O??

It brings a smile to my face just thinking about it.

It’s the first time I remember using strategy to reach a goal.

Strategy is still my jam.

What did I learn about personal branding and LinkedIn from that damn goose?

  • Always be alert to changes in your environment.?Change happens unexpectedly.
  • Confront your fears and move on.?Are you holding back from trying videos, posting articles, or creating a podcast?
  • Keep your eye on the goal. ?An effective strategy is goal related. If it’s not moving you forward, it’s a waste of time.?
  • Keep score - by the end of the summer, I had 47 wins on my chalkboard.?Check your metrics and make course corrections if required.?
  • Never underestimate the competition.?Know their weaknesses, and create a brand that stands out.
  • Always have something in your back pocket.?I still had to get down from that tree, hence the other two pieces of toast.

Food for thought - Are you being strategic about how to promote your brand, or are your competitors nipping at your heels?

Thank you for tagging me, Dumont Owen, Ph.D. How resourceful of you as a child to handle the situation on your own by thinking about something the goose would want. And how clever of you to relate it to marketing and pointing out all the parallels for us to see so clearly. Nicely done.

Thanks for the fun story, and couldn't agree more with the message behind it. It's so important to focus on strategy and process, and trust that if you have a strong adaptable game plan you will see the results in due time.
