The Goonies, Jesus, & Indiana Jones!

'For the spirit God gave does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline.”
-2 Timothy 1:7-

God created us to be fearless.

This I know. He wants us to stand up, and fight for the strengths he has given each one of us. He wants us to control our thoughts, and stand strong against the enemy. I recite 2 Timothy 1:7 when I need to fight my fears and anxieties. Sometimes I’ll think it. Sometimes I’ll whisper it out loud. Sometimes, I’ll pound my fist on my desk, shouting it out loud! Sure, this may make me look crazy at times, but who cares.

This is a battle.

Memorizing verses like these are my cerebral weaponry. This is how I counter my thoughts of fear and worry. This is how I punch the enemy square in the jaw.

Find a Bible verse that speaks to you. Memorize it. Write it on cards and tape them where you can see them. Recite it. Share it. Remember that God does not want us to be afraid. He has made us fearless.

One of my favorite movies of all time is The Goonies.

In this 1985 adventure film, a group of misfit teens band together to save their homes from a group of investors who want to bulldoze them and turn the land into a golf course. They do this by finding an old pirate’s map and then setting out to find One-Eyed Willie’s ancient treasure. This group of kids got together, made a plan, and went after what they knew in their hearts would save their town.

They had a WHY.

They went after scary.

This group of young people remind me alot of Jesus’ disciples. They were a group of misfits with a WHY, too. Their adventure was a scary one. What the Goonies (which is what they called themselves) set out to do seemed impossible. What the disciples were doing seemed impossible at the time, as well. But I am here to say that impossible is where every great adventure begins. (And seriously, if you haven’t seen The Goonies, stop reading and watch it now. Well finish reading this, then go rent it.)

Another movie hero that brings to mind how being fearless, following your WHY, and going after scary is what we have to do is Indiana Jones.

What a hero, right? We first meet Dr. Indiana Henry Jones, Jr. in the adventure film The Raiders of the Lost Ark. In the movie he is an archaeologist, a professor at a university, and an adventurer. When he discovers where the Cross of Coronado is, he goes on a quest to recover it from the people whom he suspected were grave robbers. Along the way, he is thrown in a pit of snakes, goes face-to-face with a lion, and finds himself in many sticky and unusually difficult and scary situations. I won’t spoil the movie for you if you haven’t seen it (but seriously, if you haven’t, you need to).

I will say that something interesting I discovered while writing my book, The Story of You, is a small connection between Indiana Jones and Jesus.

When Jones came face-to-face with a lion, he was forced to use his bull whip. When Jesus came face-to-face with the money-changers and merchants in the temple, John 2:15 tells us that “he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.” Both Indiana Jones, the fictional movie character, and Jesus, the real-life hero, went after scary.

They fearlessly went after scary because it was the right thing to do.

For people like you and I, doing things that scare us every day will help us discover what faith in action feels like. When you seek the knowledge and then apply that knowledge, you will be equipped to face the scary. Facing the scary will get you to faith in action. Faith in action will lead you on the greatest adventures of your life…

Impossible is where every great adventure begins!
