Google’s New Camera Switches Feature Helps Those with Limited Ability?
Not just for Google’s Pixel phones but for Android phones as well!?
The Camera Switches?feature?uses the Android phone’s camera and facial gestures?like look right, look left, look up, look down, even raising an eyebrow to navigate around a phone screen.?
A second feature?must?be downloaded?but adds more gesture control. Project Activate lets people?use the phone to send common messages, perform actions,?or verbalize for them with custom gestures.?For example,?a gesture looking left could send a text to a caretaker that?says,?“Please come here.”?
Diana?(We’re not using her real name to protect her identity.)?is a?quadriplegic,?due to a?spinal injury?to her?C5-C-7?vertebrae,?said when she heard about this new feature,?“That sounds interesting. Cool!?I’ll check it out.” She?can?use only her fingers to type?but?“they don’t work that well and they often get in the way of each other.?I?have to?use my middle finger and that obviously is not the finger I would?normally?be using. For texting, whenever possible,?I use?dictation?but I end up?having to correct a lot of it?with my fingers and then?I have to correct my finger typing with even more finger typing.?You can imagine the level of frustration I have to endure.”?
When asked if this new feature would help her out more,?Diana?replied,?“(The) New feature might help depending on the accuracy.”?
Coming Soon?
Both the Pixel and Android phones with these features will be rolling out in the next few weeks.?
This is how technology advances and complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act?(ADA)?so others less fortunate can?use the features we take for granted.?If people can’t use a device, we need to make it more accessible to them.?
The Camera Switches?feature?will?help more people stay in contact, use the Internet, and do more?with just a?wink, a smile, and?a raised eyebrow or two?or any other?facial?gesture, all from a phone or any other device with an Android camera.?
Here at Xpanxion, we like to keep?pace?with new features and help our clients become more?ADA compliant?so their clients can stay connected.?
