?? Google’s latest Core Algorithm - The Helpful Content Update ??
Having had a couple of new #SEO client enquirers recently, I’d planned to work all Saturday and most of Bank Holiday Monday especially in lieu of other time factors like the GCSE results coming through for 12 of my students.?
And, annoyingly police and solicitor matters relating to Burton (yawn).
I don’t normally do this, but since I’ve had to invest myself quite significantly this week with the latest Google roll out, I may as well spill my “beans” here with what I know so far that may well be set to impact your websites in the forthcoming weeks/months.?
Unlike myself, who personally has a rubbishy holding page as a website which I never use (and haven’t really had to) my website is NOT part of my sales funnel guys, the majority out there are most likely in a much different position.?
Here, I’ve already got new #SME clients who’s B-B websites have started to see a small but notable ranking decline so far.?
The “helpful content” algorithm roll out is a key focus right now (important to SEOs and likely you as business owners).?
So far, it’s actually slower than some anticipated, nonetheless it took some effect as it began rolling out on 25 August.
Keeping up daily with changes in the SEO industry, is a necessity; changes are constant. If you work on your own websites it’s a good idea to keep ahead with these changes too.
Because of what I do in terms of the majority of my client projects, I assign a minimum of 30 mins in any given day to stay informed (incl weekends, where I’ll dedicate more time for deeper recaps).
There are a few SEO’s I stay up to date with on LinkedIn , generally, if I’m limited on time, I’ll head straight to Barry Schwartz (CEO of RustyBrick founder - Search Engine Roundtable / News Editor - Search Engine Land (the latter two being the key publications I drown myself in when I can).?
I’ve been reading these regularly since 2007.
Highly recommended if you’re in the industry, but if you ARE in the industry I’d be surprised if you didn’t know this already!!?
Certainly helpful if you’re working on your own site rankings as a business owner! ??
?? GOOGLE HELPFUL CONTENT ALGORITHM UPDATE ??
As mentioned, I’ve definitely seen a few “shaky” (yet gentle) downward domain moves from assessing newer client’s ranking reports vs older rankings.
There’s enough movement to have caused these individuals to pick up the phone to me; they now understand why and that this hasn’t fully hit yet.
Gone are the “Panda” days where we saw dynamic impacts relatively quickly.
This latest update from Google is geared towards rewarding “people first” content.?
The process of classification is entirely?automated utilising a machine learning model, this is not manual or spam action but an additional “newer” signal along with other regular Google signals that is evaluating and ranking your content.
In the first instance, it impacts “English” searches globally with planned expansion to other languages in the future.?
During the months to follow, it will continue refining how it detects what it deems as “unhelpful” and that will lead to further efforts launched which will better reward “people first” content.
With my own clients we always adopt best “SEO practices” and provide content that’s useful and interesting to a primary website’s target audience - this means that our current clients are unlikely to have too much to concern themselves with.?
Much of my own time among a larger team of technical SEO’s (I don’t consider myself this), coders/developers and designers (freelancers) is spent on website strategy with emphasis on Content Marketing Strategy.?
It’s rare for me to spend “too much time” actually writing all that content, because we also have a team of brilliant writers. The same goes for social media, where I deal with most of the strategy but not so much adding those posts or searching best hashtags Etc.?
Overall this really is a joint effort and we have a very close nit team - the students I support working in our live digital projects, whilst are interns, are still paid great rates (many interns aren’t paid in today's world) and much of my time is dedicated to coaching and supporting them.?
We also have a few excellent videographers - I certainly deal with primary keyword targeting and ensuring we’re link building correctly within our content pieces along with additional supportive PR.???
I’m always quality checking out work across the majority of these disciplines.
I mainly deal with (but not alone), new business generation and much of the client communications and monthly reporting.
It’s when we’ve got new enquiries like those coming through to me just recently, where I can see we have problems ahead for our newest and latest clients.?
These websites have had agencies, on an ongoing, long term basis, creating for search engine traffic that strongly correlates with content their searchers have found unsatisfying.
Our job here (not solely) but with some urgency, is to get to work with careful “user” targeted, informative, interesting?and helpful pieces with some consideration for removing content that doesn’t serve these sites.
Whilst the latest 谷歌 roll out so far has had minimum impact, if your own content history isn’t rich with the right pieces for your readers, you could start to see more significant ranking slides.
For new websites recently launched less than a few months ago, its a slightly different scenario depending on where you’re at with what may already have been indexed.?
This quality content update is also relevant to your site “comments” - importantly, one thing you shouldn’t do, if you’re working on your own website is to “noindex” pages you notice have poorer quality comments, instead, you’ll need to make sure those comments are better quality.
A few extra tips:?
Google Search Console video indexing report is now live to everybody - it’ll deprecate international targeting reports on 22 Sept.
For those on their game, #Google has also updated their core web vitals report to show URL level data for example URLs.?
They’ve also added content guidelines for the education Q&A structured data.?
A few other recent Google changes here include a “view all business profiles” link in web search and “Google Discover” now allows you to hide content from specific authors.?
Google Ads has automatically upgraded (some) local campaigns for performance max and it’s testing a new local service ads experience for users.
I hope some of this helps.?
