Google's Green Light: NFT Game Ads Now Welcome

Google has eased its cryptocurrency advertising restrictions, enabling the promotion of NFT (Non-Fungible Token) games. This decision aligns with a recent alteration to Google's Play Store guidelines, which now allows for the listing of NFT games.

Effective as of September 15, 2023, advertisements for NFT games are required to fulfill particular standards and acquire certification from Google. According to the policy, ads for blockchain games cannot endorse gambling activities.

The policy change is timely, coming as the cryptocurrency market and NFT gaming sector are both seeing reduced activity.

In a recent interaction with NFTgators, Alex Salnikov, Co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer at Rarible, suggested that the updated Google policies could be "[a signal] that major tech players are recognizing blockchain’s potential."

"This move opens the door for more users to explore decentralized applications and fosters innovation among developers," Salnikov said in reference to the recent Play Store policy change.

Meanwhile, Bertrand Perez, CEO of Web3 Foundation, expressed ambiguity about how the Play Store changes are impacting blockchain entities. In a separate Q&A with NFTgators, he stated, "[a sign] of a broader convergence where more and more traditional players are accepting the potential and uses of blockchain technology."

Google is reinforcing its commitment to balancing innovation with responsible advertising practices. The company will allow ads for NFT games that promote in-game purchases of items like virtual apparel, weapons, or armor.

However, Google will persist in banning ads for games that enable wagering or staking of NFTs to win crypto and other NFT prizes, including simulated casino games offering NFT rewards and ads containing links leading users to NFT gambling sites.

Should advertisers violate these rules, they face the possibility of account suspension. Nevertheless, Google will provide at least a seven-day warning prior to any such action.
