Google’s First Core Algorithm Update of 2025 Is Here—Is Your Website at Risk?

Google just rolled out its first core algorithm update of 2025, and it’s already making waves. If you’ve noticed fluctuations in your website traffic, this update could be the cause. But don’t panic—there are clear steps you can take to analyze, adapt, and recover if your rankings have taken a hit.

In this article, I’ll walk you through how to check if your website was affected, why outdated content might be costing you rankings, and what you can do to stay ahead of future updates. Check out the video below to learn more:

How to Check if Your Website Has Been Impacted

One of the first things you should do after a Google core update is analyze your website’s performance. The best way to do this? Google Search Console—a free tool that gives you key insights into how your site is performing in search. Here’s what I recommend:

  • Compare your organic traffic before and after the update—Are you seeing a sudden drop in clicks or impressions?
  • Analyze year-over-year data—Is this a seasonal trend, or does it indicate a larger issue?
  • Identify which pages lost rankings and why—Are specific pages declining in visibility? If so, it’s time to diagnose the cause.

If your traffic is dropping, don’t worry. The next step is figuring out what Google’s update is targeting—often, content freshness and quality play a major role.

Why Outdated Content Could Be Hurting Your Rankings

At Boulder SEO Marketing, a hyper-focused SEO and content marketing agency, we saw this firsthand. Our SEO Pricing Guide lost some traffic after the update, and when we investigated, we found the reason: it was still optimized for 2024. Google prioritizes fresh, relevant content, and that means older pages that haven’t been updated could take a hit.

How to Fix It:

  • Update outdated content—Make sure your pages reflect current trends and data for 2025.
  • Refresh the publish date and reindex in Google—Updating your content isn’t enough; you need to let Google know about it.

This small change can quickly restore lost rankings and improve your site's authority.
