Google’s Bard vs. OpenAI’s ChatGPT: A Comparison of Features and Limitations
At the Google I/O conference, Google introduced the newest version of their AI chatbot, Bard, which enhances user experience with some features that ChatGPT lacks.
Bard has access to the internet, generates images as response, provides voice prompts, assists in over 20 programming languages, has Gmail integration, allows exporting of responses, uses images as prompts, and has the ability to summarize web pages by sharing the link.
However, Bard is still in the experimental phase, which means that some of the information may be inaccurate or offensive, and the model has limitations in terms of toxicity.
We are going to look at the eight main features that Bard has, which ChatGPT does not, and its limitations.
It will explore the benefits of Bard's internet connectivity, capability to generate images, use voice prompts, assist with coding, integrated with Gmail, exporting responses, using images as prompts and ability to summarize web pages, as well as its limitations in terms of toxicity.
Access to the Web
One of the most notable advantages of Bard over ChatGPT is its access to the internet. It can provide real-time information, fetch top news and answer questions with the most up-to-date data.
On the other hand, ChatGPT can access the web only through plugins on its paid version, ChatGPT Plus.
Image Generation
Bard performs better than ChatGPT in generating images as response. Through the integration with Adobe Firefly, Bard can provide more contextually rich information, enhancing the visual aspect of the conversation.
Voice Prompts
Bard also outperforms ChatGPT when it comes to voice prompts, offering users the ability to interact with voice input. This gives users a convenient way to obtain responses while multitasking or when typing is not feasible.
Coding Capabilities
Bard offers stronger support for coding than ChatGPT, assisting in over 20 programming languages including C++, Python, Java, TypeScript, JavaScript, and more. Bard can help professionals with code generation, explanation, and debugging.

Based on my experience Bard performs better than ChatGPT, the bugs in the generated code snippets are relatively lesser than ChatGPT's code snippet responses. Bard has better code explainability than ChatGPT.
Gmail Integration
The integration of Bard with Gmail has many benefits, such as enhancing the experience, making email interactions easier, and opening up new possibilities for email interactions. In comparison, ChatGPT is being added to Microsoft work software, Microsoft 365, and will be embedded into Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Export Responses
The ability of Bard to export results to Gmail and Docs instantly is a significant advantage. Users can easily share the generated content with friends and colleagues by exporting it directly to these platforms, streamlining the process of sharing information.
Image Prompts
Bard's strength in using images as prompts has opened up new possibilities for interaction and prompt generation in AI chatbots. For instance, a user can lookup holiday destinations similar to what was portrayed in another image and ask about its history and significance. GPT-4 claims to have the same capability, but it has not been introduced even in the paid version as of this writing.
Webpage Summarisation
Bard's advantage of internet connectivity allows it to summarise web pages by simply sharing the link. In contrast, ChatGPT lacks internet connectivity, requiring users to manually copy and paste content to summarise.
Limitations of Bard
The limitations of Bard are particularly evident in terms of toxicity. During a test, the model produced toxic responses more than 30% of the time when given explicitly toxic prompts. Furthermore, in languages like English, German, and Portuguese, PaLM 2 tended to exhibit more obvious toxic behavior overall.
In conclusion, Bard vastly outperforms ChatGPT in several features, including web access, generating images, using voice prompts, coding assistance, Gmail integration, exporting responses, using images as prompts, and webpage summarisation. However, Bard is still in its experimental phase, and there may be instances where the information is inaccurate or offensive. Users must be cautious in using it for sensitive topics.
