Google vs. OpenAI: The AI Toy Chest Keeps Growing
Do you remember when you were a kid and your parents were always competing for your affections? Me neither. But, that it is what it is like this week with ChatGPT and Gemini offering us wonderful new toys.
GPT-4o: Growing Pains and Pleasant Surprises
My desktop access to GPT-4o arrived yesterday morning, but initially, it felt like a half-empty stocking. Previous conversations and custom GPTs were missing, including the one I rely on to format this newsletter. Thankfully, like a surprise delivery from Santa, these features reappeared today.
On the mobile side, I'm still waiting for the promised Scarlett Johansson voice and other expressive options. For now, the voices remain monotone and robotic, lacking the nuance and interactivity I was hoping for. It seems the full range of voice features hasn't quite made it to my app yet.
Whether or not you have accessed to the new model or not, ChatGPT Voice is still a great app. See my video on: "How I Learn Using ChatGPT Voice." (Bonus: It's recorded in my awesome "She Shed.")
Gemini: A Glimpse into the Future
After yesterday's back-and-forth with Gemini about its context window size, I was delighted to receive a waitlist invitation for the elusive "2 million parameter" model. Yes, I have very important work to do – like proofreading my epic fanfic in one go. When AI can handle that, we'll know we've reached the pinnacle of technological advancement.

The AI Arms Race: What's Next?
This week has been a whirlwind of AI announcements, with both OpenAI and Google flexing their muscles. While GPT-4o boasts impressive capabilities, it still feels a bit like a work in progress, with some features yet to fully materialize. If you are a "Plus" user of ChatGPT, expect to see these features in the upcoming days. If you are a free user, it may be a few weeks. But, kudos to OpenAI to fulfilling a promise Sam Altman made in one of his speeches to always offer an awesome free model.
Meanwhile, Google's Gemini is showing promise, particularly with its expanded context window and potential for deeper integration into our workflows.
The competition between these two giants is heating up, and as users, we're the lucky beneficiaries. Whether it's GPT-4o's evolving features or Gemini's ambitious vision, the AI toy chest is overflowing with exciting possibilities. So, buckle up and enjoy the ride. The future of AI is unfolding before our eyes, and it's going to be a wild one.

5 个月...what of privacy as a basic human right, not to mention the shear energy required to surveil an entire population? Rules and algorithms have replaced laws, as government and tech sectors work to censor and throttle, deleting public voices, steering societies in this way or that, losing dissensions without batting an eye. Sexy, yes, the use of AI is so very new, and does promise to replace worker bees, especially in this new age of conformity, that is ever making its' way into our former, private and personal lives. ESG is something that is based less on truths found in nature, but something that is procured in a science that in two thousand years has not produced even a single explicit understanding of nature. Today we burn things to propulse. We believe our universe to be kinetic. And we are extending this ignorance of nature, to the management of people in societies. Brutality is replacing integrity and understanding, kindness and congeniality. Over development of our natural world has brought us to this place of climate emergency. Now we are allowing these same few 200-300 men in self appointed positions to surveil entire populations, violating civil rights in the process. MARK applied physics
