Google Updates Robots Meta Tag Document To Include AI Mode

Google has updated its Search Central documentation to provide website owners with enhanced control over how their content appears in AI-powered search features, including the newly introduced AI Mode.

Key Updates:

  • Nosnippet Directive Expansion: The 'nosnippet' directive now applies to all forms of search results, such as web search, Google Images, Discover, AI Overviews, and AI Mode. Implementing this directive will prevent the content from being used as a direct input for these AI features.
  • Max-snippet Controls: The 'max-snippet' rule now limits how much of the content may be used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode, in addition to traditional search results.

Understanding AI Mode:

AI Mode is an experimental feature initially available to Google One AI Premium subscribers. It leverages a custom version of Gemini 2.0 to deliver a search experience fully powered by AI. The feature employs a "query fan-out" technique that issues multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources before synthesizing a comprehensive response.

These updates reflect Google's ongoing efforts to give publishers greater control over how their content is used in increasingly sophisticated AI-powered search features.
