Google Updates to AI Overviews | Will Search Generative Experience lead to less Google traffic?

Google have recently addressed a few concerns that people have had about ai overviews as well as letting us know how the new Search generative Experience has been performing for users and websites.

1. Higher User Satisfaction and Conversational Searches

Google has observed that users have higher satisfaction rates when using AI overviews. This indicates that AI overviews are here to stay and will likely see further development. I predict that we may eventually see the inclusion of ad placements in Google ai results.

Additionally, users are asking more detailed and complex questions, suggesting a shift towards more conversational interactions with Google, rather than simply clicking on a list of links.

2. Increased Dwell Time but Potentially Less Traffic

One of the significant trends noted by Google is the increased "dwell time" on webpages suggested by AI overviews. This means that users spend more time engaging with the content they are directed to. However, despite this increased engagement, the overall traffic to websites, including those referenced in AI overviews, will more than likely decrease. This is because users can get more comprehensive information directly from the overviews, reducing the need to visit multiple sites.

3. Addressing Misinformation and Fake Screenshots

Google has addressed concerns about misinformation, specifically fake screenshots showing AI overviews giving out false information. In my opinion, similar to other AI tools like ChatGPT, AI overviews are not always going to be accurate. Google have stated their commitment to continuously working on improving the accuracy and reliability of its AI responses to mitigate these issues.

4. Recent Updates and Fixes to AI Overviews

Google has implemented several updates to enhance the performance and reliability of AI overviews:

  • Detection Mechanisms: Improved mechanisms to detect nonsensical queries that shouldn't trigger an AI overview.
  • Content Limitations: Reduced the inclusion of satire and humor content in AI responses to prevent misleading information.
  • User-Generated Content Restrictions: Limited the use of user-generated content in responses to avoid offering misleading advice.
  • Triggering Restrictions: Added restrictions for queries where AI overviews were not proving to be helpful.
  • Guardrails for News and Health Topics: Strengthened protections to ensure AI overviews do not appear for hard news topics, where freshness and factual accuracy are crucial, and enhanced quality protections for health-related queries.
