Will Google survive the AI revolution?

by Chantelle van den Heever

As one of the world's most valuable brands, Google has become an integral part of our daily lives. However, the emergence of ChatGPT, a highly successful AI chatbot, poses a real threat to the longevity of the verb "Google" and the search engine giant's position in the market.?

It seems like this tech giant is too big to fail – but that's a famously dangerous assumption (remember Blackberry, anyone?). As of 2023, there seems to be a real threat to the position of Google LLC as a search engine giant.?

The Rise of ChatGPT?

Many tech companies have attempted to develop AI chatbots similar to ChatGPT, but their success rate has been disappointingly low. Previous failures by prominent names in the technology sector have left experts sceptical about the possibility of creating an AI chatbot that avoids toxic and discriminatory behaviour. However, ChatGPT shattered these doubts when it debuted in December 2022, impressing users with its ability to provide direct and relevant answers without the need for extensive searches.?

The Disruption?

Late in 2022, various media outlets started reporting on a supposed "code red" issued by Google executives based on information from a meeting shared with The New York Times (Grant & Metz, 2022).?

The main concern around the entrance of ChatGPT to the global tech stage (for Google, at least) is that many people would prefer a direct, consolidated answer to their questions rather than having to scour a list of results that may or may not be relevant. The difference is that apps like ChatGPT provide answers like a friend or colleague answering your question directly instead of pointing you to a list of possible answers with differing levels of relevance to your situation. ?

This could see users opting to interact with ChatGPT rather than running their search query through Google, which could result in Google losing out massively on income generated through paid ads. ?

There is little doubt that Google is sitting up and taking notice. But whether there will be immediate action is anyone's guess. Reports are surfacing around the web stating that Sundar Pichai, Alphabet's CEO, has issued directives to several groups in the company to develop response plans to the looming threat of ChatGPT- but none of this has been made official yet (Sandaravelu, 2022).? ?

Google's Head of AI, Jeff Dean, explained to employees that the organisation would be making more conservative decisions in pursuing the release of a competitor to ChatGPT due to a more significant reputational risk than the risk to smaller organisations, like OpenAI (Nguyen, 2022). ?

The Future of Google?

The coming months are crucial for Google's market position as the list of competitors to ChatGPT, and by extension, Google, continues to expand. While the immediate threat may seem manageable, Google's ability to weather the AI revolution and maintain its dominance remains uncertain.

The company's fate will depend on its ability to adapt, innovate, and offer unique value in the face of increasing competition.?

As AI advancements reshape our digital landscape, even tech giants like Google must navigate the changing tides. ChatGPT represents a formidable challenge to Google's search engine supremacy, offering users a more direct and efficient alternative. The battle for dominance is underway, and the outcome remains uncertain. Only time will tell whether Google can successfully navigate the AI revolution and emerge as the victor.??
