Result: Sundar Pichai, Google CEO is willing to fight!
Google will release LaMDA, its answer to ChatGPT, an AI chatbot that threatens Google's search business. Alphabet, Google's parent company, reported a 34% decline in profit in the 4th quarter of 2022 as the wider ad market contracted due to economic concerns. Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the company will focus on responsible AI and bring new AI tools to search and other areas to increase efficiency. Google's ad revenue dropped 2% in the 4th quarter and missed analyst expectations. Google's stock fell 4% in after-hours trading.
Update 6.2.2023:
Google CEO Sundar Pichai sent a memo to all employees, viewed by CNBC, asking them to test their AI chatbot, Bard, as part of an internal hackathon. The company will also be recruiting developers and businesses to test an API using the LaMDA technology. This move comes amid pressure from employees and investors to respond to ChatGPT, a highly successful chatbot from OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, that was launched last year.

Today, I want to focus on two important topics in more detail. Then, I will provide a brief overview of our business performance this quarter. Firstly, how we can unlock the tremendous opportunities that AI offers for consumers, partners, and our business. And secondly, how we can focus our investments and make important decisions as a company to achieve these goals.
AI is the most transformative technology we are working on today. With our talented researchers, infrastructure, and technology, we are well-positioned to take advantage of AI as it reaches its peak. Six years ago, I first talked about Google being an AI-first company and since then, we have been a leader in developing AI. Our Transformers research project and groundbreaking work on diffusion models are now the foundation of many generative AI applications you are starting to see today.
Translating these technical advancements into products that help billions of people is what our company has always excelled at. Everyone working on these projects is excited and we will move forward boldly, but with a deep sense of responsibility and our AI principles at the core of everything we do.
Over the past year, we have been preparing for this moment and you will see a lot from us in the coming months across three main areas of opportunity. Firstly, large models, such as Lambda and Con, the industry's largest and most sophisticated models. In the coming weeks and months, we will make these language models available, starting with Lambda, so people can interact directly with them. This will help us get feedback, test, and safely improve them. These models are particularly impressive for composing, constructing, and summarizing, and they will become even more useful as they provide up-to-date and factual information.
Secondly, we will provide new tools and APIs for developers, creators, and partners, empowering them to innovate and build their own applications with AI. On top of our language, multimodal, and other AI models, this will open up new possibilities for innovation.
Lastly, our AI is a powerful tool for businesses and organizations of all sizes. Our Cloud AI platform, including infrastructure and tools for developers and data scientists, is available to customers via Google Cloud. We also offer specific AI solutions for sectors like Manufacturing, Life Sciences, and Retail, and will continue to roll out more. Workspace users will benefit from AI-powered features, such as smart canvas for collaboration and smart compose for creation. We are also working to bring large language models to Gmail and Docs, and will make other helpful generated capabilities available, from coding to design and more. For our advertising partners, AI is powering significant campaign improvements and value-adding features.
In addition to all this, AI is also improving Google's other products dramatically. We continue to invest in AI across the board and Google AI and DeepMind are integral to a bright AI-first future. Over the past few years, DeepMind has been increasingly working with groups within Google and beyond, and to reflect this progress, we will be making a financial reporting change that Ruth will discuss more about in our comments.
We are just at the beginning of our AI journey and the best is yet to come.
