BrightEdge, a digital marketing firm, observed a notable decline in AI search results over recent weeks. According to their data, the percentage of AI Overviews in search results dropped from 11% to 7% by the end of June 2024. This reduction comes after several users raised issues about the quality and reliability of these AI-generated summaries.

User Concerns and Google's Response
Concerns about AI Overviews were amplified when a user seeking advice on improving pizza sauce received a bizarre suggestion to add glue, a misinterpretation of a joke from a forum post. This incident quickly went viral, prompting questions about the robustness of Google's AI algorithms.
In response to these concerns, Google has denied significantly cutting back on AI Overview results. A spokesperson from Google told The Verge that the feature never had extensive reach to begin with, as it was limited to users who opted in. They emphasized that the data BrightEdge used only reflects a subset of users.
