Is Google running a monopoly?

Apparently we are like moths to the blazing fire that Google is, and a day without it would be similar to getting stuck in a room less of air. The gravity of the situation could be better enunciated after going through a short history lesson. But first, is Google really meant to be Google? The name Google itself was a typo with the founders initially going for ‘Googol’. According to research conducted in the baroque headquarters of Google and elsewhere it was found that the ‘I’m feeling lucky’ button on Google is hardly used by anyone anywhere. When various users across diverse backgrounds were interviewed, a surprising revelation popped out. Though the users never really use the ‘I’m feeling lucky’ button but they still want Google to keep it as gives a sense of comfort to them. Amazed? But wait there is more. The famous Google homepage commonly referred to as ‘Doodle’ is visited by millions of people daily to embrace any event that had a substantial impact on the world. But ‘LOL’ there is another jolly story behind this. The first Doodle page had a picture of a burning man on it. This was to signify by the founders Page and Brin that they are off to a ‘Burning Man’ festival in Nevada and thus cannot address any technical issues that day.

Coming back to the question-What if Google had a blackout? Can we afford a day without Google? Imagine that u woke up in the morning, prepared a hot cup of java and sat on your laptop to check any messages that u might have got from your honeybunches on Facebook. But alas! U cannot do that. Google chrome is owned by Google. Convincing yourself that it’s not the apocalypse, u switched over to other slowpoke browsers and opened Internet Explorer. U managed to open your Facebook account but there is always a lag that puts u back on your procrustean bed. This is because Google Analytics is used by lakhs of websites for their fluent functioning but to your misfortune that is down too. U are getting late but u gotta check any cardinal mails that u must have got from your boss. I hope u understand where I am getting at? After a long tiring day at work, u plan to meet your pretty girlfriend. So u picked her up, decided to go to a fascinating mall somewhere along the outskirts. U turn your GPS on, but it displays a message stating ‘Google is down’ but to your good karma u have a fancy android phone but wait even android is owned by Google. This ‘not so sweet’ oblivion can continue for a while but why put yourself through all this pain, the tears and the cries. By the way owing to more than 160 acquisitions since 2010, Google also owns Youtube, Picassa and Motorola.

The shutdown of Google might have draconian consequences for businesses as well. Almost 96% of Google’s revenue comes through its pay per click advertising scheme. Google founders are very particular of the fact that every response must arrive within a jiffy (500ms). Though there are other advertising alternatives such as Yahoo and Bing but they are slow like snails and lack the zeal that Google brings along with it. Unerringly, Google has done well to satisfy its own motto

‘U can be serious without a coat’.
