THE STORY
Yesterday, Google announced a major re-structuring, and it’s getting back to basics with some ABCs.
WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?
Meet Alphabet. It’s the new parent company that will manage Google and then all of Google’s most eccentric ideas.
SO WHAT’S HAPPENING TO ‘GOOGLE’?
Same old. It’s still an Interwebs company that knows everything about you. And now it’s just going to stay focused on the basics — search, advertising, Android, Chrome, maps, and YouTube. A guy named Sundar Pichai — senior VP of products at Google — will take over as CEO, freeing up Google co-founder Larry Page to work with co-founder Sergey Brin on Alphabet.
SO WHAT EXACTLY IS ALPHABET?
The parent company that now manages Google, but also the Jetson Life. The Alphabet portfolio will include all the ideas that have become a wee bit distracting to Google. Think: curing disease, trying to make us live longer, self-driving cars, developing nanoparticles, and making thermostats smarter.
theSKIMM
Google was founded as a search engine. But over the years, it’s been chasing shiny new tech things that investors think distract from its money-maker. This re-structuring is a way for Google to have its core business and eat its Alphabet soup too.
