According to a report from The Information, Alphabet Inc's Google has decided to postpone the launch of its fully custom chip for Pixel smartphones until 2025. Two sources familiar with the matter revealed this information. Originally, Google had planned to release the chip, known internally as Redondo, next year in order to replace the semicustom chips it currently develops with Samsung Electronics. However, the tech giant has now opted to switch from Samsung to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) for the production of the chips, called Tensors.

TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker, has renowned companies such as Apple and Nvidia as its customers. Google will continue its partnership with Samsung for another year, delaying the introduction of a fully custom design chip until 2025. This chip, internally referred to as Laguna, will be based on TSMC's cutting-edge 3-nanometer manufacturing process, which is currently considered the most advanced in the world, as stated in the report.

A group of 27 global investors, managing $2.1 trillion in assets, have formed a consortium led by AXA Investment Managers and Sycomore Investment Management to address the potential negative impact of technology on mental health. The consortium aims to engage with tech companies across various sectors, encouraging them to develop strategies to protect the mental health and well-being of their customers. Concerns include screen overuse leading to behavioral disorders and depression, addiction to internet and gaming, and the impact on self-esteem and sleep. The investors will guide companies in setting goals and advocating for transparency and disclosure. If companies fail to meet expectations, individual actions may be taken, such as downgrading ESG scores or filing shareholder resolutions. The consortium aims to raise awareness and encourage concrete action plans to mitigate long-term ESG risks.

In a competitive push to establish themselves in the global AI arena, Alibaba Group Holdings and Huawei Technologies Co unveiled new products at recent events. Alibaba's subsidiary, Alibaba Cloud, introduced Tongyi Wanxiang, an AI image generator, at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference. The image generator, initially available in beta form to enterprise customers, will vie against rivals like OpenAI's DALL-E and Midjourney Inc's Midjourney, which have gained significant global traction. Meanwhile, Huawei showcased its Pangu 3.0 AI model during its annual developer conference. Unlike content generation-focused approaches, Huawei's model prioritizes industrial applications such as enhancing safety inspections for freight train carriages, supporting government services, and improving weather prediction accuracy. The accelerated development of AI products by Chinese tech companies stems from the transformative impact of Open AI's ChatGPT chatbot, with generative AI predicted to contribute trillions of dollars annually to the global economy.

ChatGPT's Remarkable Growth Stumbles with First Traffic Decline Since Launch

ChatGPT, the groundbreaking AI chatbot that took the world by storm, experienced a rare setback in June as its website traffic and unique visitors saw a decline for the first time since its November launch, according to analytics firm Similarweb. The data revealed a 9.7% drop in worldwide desktop and mobile traffic, a 5.7% decrease in unique visitors, and an 8.5% reduction in time spent on the website. Similarweb's David Carr suggested that waning traffic indicated a decrease in the chatbot's novelty, while RBC Capital Markets' Rishi Jaluria attributed it to a growing demand for real-time generative AI. ChatGPT, which garnered an impressive 100 million monthly active users just two months after its debut, became the fastest-growing consumer application ever, amassing over 1.5 billion monthly visits and securing a spot among the top 20 websites globally. However, the emergence of competitors like Google's Bard chatbot and Microsoft's Bing chatbot, as well as factors like infrastructure challenges and the summer break for students, may have contributed to the recent slowdown in growth.?

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, also released a dedicated iOS app in May, potentially diverting some traffic from its website. Despite the temporary slowdown, ChatGPT continues to be popular, with over 17 million downloads on iOS globally and an average of 530,000 weekly downloads in the United States. The recent growth plateau may actually help manage the substantial costs associated with running ChatGPT, which relies on significant computing power to handle user queries. OpenAI offers a premium subscription at $20 per month, granting users access to the more advanced GPT-4 model, and an estimated 1.5 million people have signed up for the subscription in the U.S. OpenAI anticipates generating $200 million in revenue this year through various avenues, including the sale of API access and its partnership with Microsoft.
