Google Maps' Handy "Driving Mode" Might Be Removed Soon

Google announced in 2022 that it was discontinuing Assistant Driving Mode, which provided a "Dashboard" home screen. As a result, Google Maps for Android has another optimized UI called "Driving Mode," but it will also be deprecated in February 2024.

Driving Mode in Google Maps is accessed after starting navigation directions. It appears as a black bar at the bottom of the screen with quick access to the Google Assistant, Maps app and music/podcast controls.

The latest Google app update includes lines of code that mention Driving Mode being removed in February. One string says "This view is going away in February." Another provides instructions to use the Assistant for calling, messaging or media while navigating instead.

Previously, Google killed the separate "Assistant Driving Mode Dashboard" home screen experience, focusing users on Maps Driving Mode instead. However, this new find suggests Maps' version may soon be gone too.

Google may direct users to just use basic navigation mode in Maps going forward. This allows faster voice input via the Assistant. So while functionality won't be lost, the optimized interface could be removed.

If Driving Mode does leave Maps next year, it may be due to EU regulations on opening up Google services. But it would remove a handy experience for users on the go. Only time will tell if this feature truly ends or gets replaced by something better!
