The Google Leaks Issue

The Google Leaks Issue

A monthly newsletter delivered to your digital doorstep with actionable tips and strategies for your brand’s success.

Welcome to The Lead Magnate, marketers.

In this month's issue, we're breaking down the recent Google search algorithm leak. Yes, that big 2,569-page leak (source: Search Engine Journal) that’s shaking up the SEO world.?

Our #Magnates have spent hours digging into the leaked documents and analyzing the industry's reactions to bring you a clear and concise overview (as well as links to other reliable sources you can refer to).

First off, the leaked documents reveal some surprising insights about Google's ranking factors, challenging long-held assumptions. For instance, did you know that Google has seven different types of PageRank? Or that it has a specific method for identifying personal blogs, news sites, and ecommerce stores?

And that's just the tip of the iceberg. If you’d like to go into greater detail but not too much detail (trust us, we know how you feel), we've published a blog post that covers the most important aspects of the leak.

This blog post also addresses:

  1. Ranking factors for content or content optimization
  2. Link-building ranking factors
  3. On-page optimization and user behavior?

For those of you who want to get right to it, we've got you. We’ll cover the essential ranking factors for content optimization and link building, right here, in The Lead Magnate.?

Key Ranking Factors That Stand Out for Content Optimization

While many familiar ranking factors were confirmed in the leak, several lesser-known factors warrant closer attention, as also highlighted in this helpful article by Search Engine Land.

1. Ensuring Site-Wide Quality

Google looks at overall site performance, not just individual pages. To keep the website performing well and ensure its quality,?

  • Remove or Improve Poorly Performing Pages: If some pages aren’t performing well, either improve the quality of those pages or delete them. This practice maintains the site’s overall quality.
  • Keep Content Fresh: Regularly update new information on your existing content pieces and cover the latest topics relevant to the industry.?

2. UGC Quality Measurement?

For sites with user-generated content (like comments or reviews), take the steps to ensure:

  • Separate Quality Checks: Google checks the quality of user-generated content (UGC) and your main content separately. Both need to be authentic and up to the industry standards.
  • Encourage and Manage UGC: Get users to post valuable content, and make sure to monitor and remove anything that’s low-quality or irrelevant.

Ranking Factors That Stand Out for Link Building

1.? Link Relevance and Traffic

  • Quality over quantity: Google prioritizes backlinks from relevant, high-traffic pages. Instead of running after high DA websites, remember, Google values both relevance and popularity when assessing links.

2. Mentions (Without Links)?Matter

  • An article titled The Google API Leak Should Change How Marketers and Publishers Do SEO shared a unique insight on brand mentions. Mentions are like links: Google values brand mentions even without direct hyperlinks.
  • Additionally, mentions of your brand in authoritative content can influence your site's search rankings. These mentions contribute to your site’s authority and relevance, even without a clickable link.

3.? PR and Link Building

  • Search Engine Journal’s article on Rethinking Strategies Amid Google API “Leak” recommends combining traditional link-building with public relations efforts (such as securing mentions in high-quality news sites or guest post articles) to enhance a site’s authority. If you’re not sure where to begin with this, our Digital PR issue can help.
  • Target high-quality news sources and guest post opportunities on reputable websites.

Remember, to rank high on SERPs it's also important to prioritize technical SEO and user engagement.

This is really insightful! One of my key takeaways from the #GoogleLeak is the emphasis on site wide quality in addition to individual page quality. I see so many sites that invest in creating so much content but a very small percentage of pages actually rank and pull in any traffic. There's no excuse for ignoring any more! What say?
