Google I/O Keynote 2023: Key Announcements

Google I/O 2023 concluded on the 11th of May, and the event was replete with a plethora of exhilarating announcements. Although the keynote addressed only specific topics, there remained an abundance of subjects for discussion, and a multitude of awe-inspiring new products and services were unveiled.?

The keynote was not brief; hence, to spare you the inconvenience of enduring the entire two hours, I am spotlighting some of the most significant announcements from Google I/O so that you may share in my excitement (I shall nevertheless provide a link to the video at the bottom should you desire to view it).

Artificial Intelligence is Ubiquitous

As one might have surmised, AI was omnipresent during the event, to such an extent that a supercut now exists of Sundar Pichai uttering the phrase “AI.”?

Throughout the event, Google announced a multitude of ways in which AI will augment its products, ranging from the novel Magic Composer in the Google Messages app to the innovative new features forthcoming for Google Maps and Photos. Google also seized the opportunity to underscore the new Duet AI-powered features arriving on Workspace apps such as Docs, Sheets, Slides, and more. With these new features, Google can assist users in composing content, organising plans, and generating images from words.?

And for those intrigued by the prospect of experimenting with Google Bard, the company has now eliminated the waitlist, thereby enabling everyone to engage with the upgraded chatbot. While a standalone Bard app is not forthcoming, Google is integrating it into various apps and services, such as Adobe Firefly.

Google Search, augmented with superpowers

It has long been conjectured that Google would incorporate generative AI into search in order to rival Bing and ChatGPT. After all, AI has constituted a significant component of search for an extended period of time (is it not evident why it is so proficient?) At I/O, Google unveiled a new search experiment that will permit users to evaluate its generative AI. This should enable Search to attain a more comprehensive understanding of longer-form questions while providing a readily comprehensible synopsis of pertinent information that could potentially obviate the necessity for incessant scrolling in search of the correct answer.?

The new search experience is not yet available; however, you may presently register for the waitlist via the Google app.

Android 14 and Wear OS 4

Although Android 14 has been in beta for some time, Google has expanded on the upcoming update and the additional features that I can expect. Users will, for example, receive more Material You customizations for their lock screen and wallpaper, and a feature dubbed "Ultra HDR" should significantly improve the vibrancy of their photos. Additionally, there are a plethora of new privacy features, enhanced predictive back animations, and more.?

Android 14 Beta 2 is now available for Pixels, and the beta programme has been expanded to include even more Android OEMs.?

However, that is not all. Google also seized the opportunity to tantalise with a preview of the impending Wear OS 4 update. With this update, the company promises superior battery life, improved accessibility features, enhanced watch faces, and finally, a backup and restore feature. Several eagerly anticipated apps are also forthcoming, such as Gmail and Calendar.?

I remain uncertain as to which watches will be eligible for the update, which constitutes a significant question since Mobvoi continues to experience difficulties with Wear OS 3. I hope to receive further information in due course.

The arrival of Google’s Pixel Fold is imminent

One of the most exhilarating hardware launches was the Pixel Fold. It had been the subject of rumours for an extended period, and following numerous leaks, the foldable has finally materialised. And it is resplendent. Regardless of one’s opinion of foldable phones, the Pixel Fold is truly a sight to behold and may even surpass all other foldable phones in terms of aesthetics.

The phone is equipped with a Tensor G2 chipset, a capacious 7.6-inch folding screen, a smaller 5.8-inch external screen, and a 48MP triple camera setup on the rear. Owing to Google’s endeavours to enhance the Android experience on larger screens, Android 13 appears and functions superbly on the Fold, particularly with regard to aspects such as multitasking.?

As a folding phone entering the already competitive folding phone market in India, it will be interesting to see how the Pixel stacks up to Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo in this space.

The Pixel 7A aims to offer an exceptional value

I was impressed by the Pixel 6A last year, yet Google has significantly elevated its game with the Pixel 7a. Admittedly, it is marginally more costly; however, you are receiving upgraded cameras, a new 90Hz AMOLED display, the flagship-level Tensor G2 chipset, and the same upgrade promise that Google extends to its premier phones.?

There is much to admire about the Pixel 7a, including its stunning Sea and Coral colourways, which truly distinguish it from the crowd. And at a considerable ?43,999, it truly puts some other Android phones in the same price bracket to shame. Indeed, it renders the iPhone SE (2022) decidedly antiquated.

The Pixel Tablet revolutionises your conception of a smart home hub.?

Although I did not receive a new Nest Hub, Google launched the next best thing: the Pixel Tablet. It is an Android 13 tablet with an 11-inch display that performs all the functions you would expect of a tablet. However, Google imbued the tablet with a novel purpose by incorporating a charging dock. In this manner, it transforms into a smart display, enabling you to control your smart devices while still interacting with your favourite apps.?

The most advantageous aspect is that with Chromecast built-in, you can effortlessly cast your content to the Pixel Tablet while it is in hub mode, making it easy to truly enjoy the charging dock's powerful speaker.

Google Home gets a fresh coat of paint

The Google Home application has undergone a series of refurbishments and is now prepared to unveil its enhanced version to the general public. The update has rendered the application more aesthetically pleasing, customizable, and functional. The most frequently used controls are now prominently displayed, obviating the need to rummage for devices such as thermostats or lamps.

The integration of camera technology has been significantly ameliorated, allowing not only for the incorporation of legacy Nest cameras but also for a 38% increase in speed within the Google Home application. Wear OS devices have also been endowed with new capabilities, including controls for cameras and door locks, as well as augmented notifications for doorbells, among others.

The novel Google Home experience will be accessible to all beginning on May 11th.

Magic Editor is Google's forthcoming mind-boggling photo editing tool

There is much to admire about Google Photos, yet one new feature truly astounded us during the keynote. Google demonstrated "Magic Editor," which elevates the Magic Eraser I know and cherish to an entirely new level. Rather than merely removing an object or person from a photo, Magic Editor will enable you to perform actions such as brightening the sky or relocating the subject from one position in the photo to another. It can truly imbue your images with an entirely new appearance.?

The feature will be available on "select Pixel phones" later this year for users to evaluate and provide feedback. I hope that it will eventually be extended to other Android phones in the same manner as Magic Eraser.

Find My Device receives an upgrade

Google is augmenting its Find My Device feature in order to assist users in locating devices, even if they are offline or do not support location services. In the near future, the new Find My Device network will access other Android phones in order to locate a device that may be beyond your immediate vicinity.?

"The new Find My Device network will harness over a billion Android devices across the world to help you locate your missing belongings, such as headphones, tracker tags, or even your phone via Bluetooth proximity."

Google states that it is also collaborating with companies such as Tile, Chipolo, and Pebblebee, which will be able to access the Find My Device network.?

Additionally, Google will enable a new feature that will notify users if an unknown tracker is following them. This development follows shortly after Apple and Google announced a joint effort to combat unwanted tracking.

There remains an abundance of information yet to be assimilated

The announcements made during the keynote address merely skimmed the surface of the plethora of revelations to be made. Google I/O boasts a multitude of sessions and workshops that furnish updates on a myriad of subjects that were not broached during the keynote, as well as providing more profound insights into topics that were discussed.

You can, however, check out the entire keynote here

The name 'Magic Editor' doesn't do justice to what it does. It is beyond magic. It is too good to be true. ????
