Dear Google, I don't want to be prosecuted for using my mobile phone when driving and you can help me to avoid doing so. Let me explain.
From today - the 1st of March 2017 - the penalties in England, Scotland and Wales increased for using our mobile phones while driving to 6 penalty points and a £200 fine. That means if a driver is caught twice then they will lose their driving licence.
When I drive I sometimes use Google Maps as my Sat Nav to help me get to my destination safely, particularly when I'm unfamiliar with the directions, or during rush hour when the traffic is heavy so Maps can advise me on alternative routes.
The problem is that my phone can also pop-up event notifications, - such as appointment reminders - over the top of the Sat Nav screen. The only way to remove them is by dismissing them which means touching my phone while driving. If I don't then it renders the Sat Nav useless as I can't see the map screen.
Clearly, this makes it difficult to use the Sat Nav unless I want to risk prosecution.
I believe there is a simple solution whereby my phone should have the option to work in "Sat Nav ONLY" mode which would disable all other functions except the Sat Nav.
So Google, please help UK drivers by introducing such a feature as soon as possible, and do your part to prevent accidents, injuries or worse.
I've searched Google to see if this feature exists and couldn't find anything, so if I'm wrong then please let me know how to do this easily.
If it doesn't exist and you agree with me that this would be a good feature enhancement then please add your comments to the Feature Request I submitted to Google here - https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/maps/gT7CX7LKOQI;context-place=forum/maps
