Google Cloud introduces the Cryptomining Protection Initiative
Google Cloud unveils the Cryptomining Protection Program exclusively for Security Command Center (SCC) Premium users, offering a substantial coverage of up to $1 million to safeguard against unpermitted Google Cloud compute expenses incurred due to undetected crypto-mining attacks.
According to Google Cybersecurity Action Team (GCAT), threat actors frequently targeted weak and default passwords to access Google Cloud accounts. Once inside the compromised cloud accounts, they performed crypto-mining 65% of the time.
How Google Cloud’s Cryptomining Protection Program Works
SCC Premium encompasses an array of robust threat detection capabilities intricately embedded within the Google Cloud infrastructure. Among these capabilities is the detection of crypto-mining attacks, which serves as the fundamental technology supporting Google Cloud's financial protection program.
To detect such attacks, Within SCC Premium, virtual machine memory undergoes thorough scanning to identify any presence of malware. Google Cloud emphasizes that its approach enables the detection of attacks that might evade detection by standalone security tools relying solely on cloud log analysis and API-driven information gathering. The ultimate result would be Google identifying possible threats before they get explored.
