Will Google Chrome’s latest version finally be able to tackle memory hog?

Google?has almost been in the news with its memory hog in?Chrome?and the problems associated with it. But recently, Google might have come up with a solution to counter it.?

Before we delve into the solution, let’s see what the problem actually is.

“Shoot! Google Chrome ran out of memory while trying to display a webpage."

That's the message one sees when Chrome runs out of memory space. To understand why Google Chrome takes up so much memory space, one needs to understand how several modern browsers tend to operate.

Every app on the computer or laptop runs processes in the system’s RAM. RAM is temporary storage for all kinds of data and the CPU can access data held in the system RAM which is comparatively faster than a hard drive or even an SSD.

Is Google Chrome really a memory hog?

It is known that modern browsers take up a lot of memory and that might not be a problem at all if one has at least 32GB of RAM. Google Chrome uses multiple gigabytes of memory that can quickly slow the computer or laptop down if the machine is on low specs.

Realization Dawns!

  • Google has recently integrated optimization features which have been created to improve battery life and memory use on machines that are running on the latest version of Chrome on the desktop web browser
  • Its new Memory Saver and Energy Saver modes were initially announced in December 2022 along with the release of Chrome 108
  • As stated by Android Police, the 2 optimization utilities have been rolled out worldwide onto Google Chrome 110 desktops and laptops for Windows, Mac, and Chromebooks

What more?

  • Memory Saver mode mainly snoozes Google Chrome tabs that are not being used currently in order to free up RAM space for more important tasks and also present the user with a smooth browsing experience
  • Even if one is a tab holder, and inactive tabs are visible, they can be reloaded at any point of time
  • Your most used websites can also be marked as exempt from Memory Saver to ensure they’re always running at the maximum possible performance
  • Energy Saver mode also limits any unnecessary background activity in the website such as visual effects?
  • One can choose to kick in when a device running Google Chrome is reduced to 20 percent battery or also from the moment one unplugs from a power source

Both Energy Saver and Memory Saver will be enabled by default on devices running Google Chrome 110. They can also be disabled at any time from the Performance tab of the system settings.

Will this finally be a resolution for Memory Hog?
