Google Algorithm #8: Mobile Friendly Update (Mobilegeddon)
On April 21, 2015, Google will release a significant new mobile-friendly ranking algorithm that’s designed to give a boost to mobile-friendly pages in Google’s mobile search results.
The change, which will take about a week to complete, is so significant that the date it actually happens is being referred to by a variety of names. Here at Search Engine Land, we’re calling itmobilegeddon, but sometimes it’s also referred to as mobilepocalyse, mopocalypse ormobocalypse.
One of the best ways to prepare is to test that Google considers your web pages to be mobile-friendly by using its Mobile-Friendly Test tool. More about the algorithm, including ways to bring improve the mobile-friendliness of your pages
The new Google mobile algorithm has arrived in all its fury, and everyone seems a little disappointed in the change that failed to rival Panda.
Entire industries were not destroyed, and even if they were, former Google head of webspam Matt Cutts isn’t around to blame anymore.
According to Google Search Console ringleader John Mueller, this is due to the fact that, while the new mobile algorithm affected a lot of queries, most sites were either:
- Already mobile friendly, or
- Changed, but not significantly enough to notice (vs. Panda where the entire site dropped in search results).
In this column, I’ll explain how to get as close as possible to finding the cause of gain or loss of mobile clicks at the page and query level using Google Search Analytics. I’ll also attempt to establish a good benchmark based on the current strength of the new Google mobile algorithm.

9 年Given that so many people use mobile devices this Google update was a real "no brainer" in my opinion. Of the people that I work with many already had mobility setup with their Website. It was an important move for Google but not one that caused tremendous grief like some of their other updates have done.

9 年Great article! It's true that Mobilegeddon really made a lot of SEO and big businesses really angry. With Google's Panda, Penguin, Hummingbird, and now Mobilegeddon, web pages that have historically ranked very high, cannot be found. I understand Google's perspective that if EVERYONE is now looking at web pages via mobile devices, the pages that are optimized for mobile, should rank higher. This is better for the surfer as well as encouraging companies to be sure their web pages are responsive.
