Google AI Overviews Buzz: AIOs for unlogged users, increased number of links, and more

What have community been noticing about AI Overviews lately?

1) Last week, there was a lot of buzz over the appearance of AI snippets for users who weren’t logged into their Google accounts. Many SEO specialists shared screenshots from incognito mode showing the AI Overviews. This week, Brodie Clark and Aleyda Solis shared their observations on X.

2) Recently, Lily Ray and Barry Schwartz noticed an increase in the number of links provided by AI Overviews in search results. This week, we’re seeing that trend continue! The guys from Marketing O'Clock posted their thoughts:

“When we said we wanted links in the AI Overviews, this isn't exactly what we meant. Google updates AI Overviews to include links in each answer, but each link directs to the same page?”

3) We’ve seen a lot of news about AI Overviews expanding to new countries like the United Kingdom, India, Japan, Indonesia, Mexico, and Brazil. This week, Gagan Ghotra noted an interesting detail that could explain why its expansion to other countries remains gradual and slow. He used Australia as an example:

“...Google is engaging with Aus Gov because of these AI Ethics Principles. Which are a major block on Google's way to officially launch AI Overviews in Australia and because of these they didn't even launch Search Labs here which allowed users to test SGE (previous name of AI Overviews)”


4) Glenn Gabe helped the SEO community understand how to track results in the frames of AIO snippets:

“...publisher links in AI overviews take on the position of the entire AIO block. So no matter where you are ranking in the AIO, it's going to be the position of the block, which is often #1…”

Barry Schwartz later shared his thoughts on this in an article. He also included some links to Google’s documentation.
