GoodKredit Philippines’ Automatic Fare Collection System(AFCS) Serves as a Convenient Solution to Daily Commute
Usually, we Filipinos hop on a jeepney that goes to a specific route, pay a somewhat arbitrary fare, and get off. It sounds like an easy system to incorporate into our daily routine, but in reality, it is tedious and inconvenient more than ever.
In a study published in 2019 entitled “Emerging from the ‘worst’: An ethnography of the modern Filipino commuting culture behind the Metro Manila traffic crisis”, some factors that affect commuting are:
Within these three are specific factors that affect the overall performance of the public transportation system, this includes inefficiency in following laws on paying fares and passenger accommodations.?
These are one of the many factors that GoodKredit had in mind to address when introducing the AFCS or Automated Fare Collection System to PUVs in the Philippines.
What is GoodKredit Automatic Fare Collection System (AFCS)?
In 2017, a comprehensive system reform was implemented by the Department of Transportation to transform the public land transportation industry through vehicle modernization and setting new standards and guidelines. These changes are set to provide a stable livelihood for drivers, make it easier to commute, and make sure that PUVs pass the necessary guidelines (such as proper route planning) before they have the permit to operate
GoodKredit’s Automatic Fare Collection System (AFCS) is a system that supports this reform. It is a system that the operator merchants can use to properly monitor sales by setting their conditions and implementing it on the Point of Sales (POS) machine used in the PUV/PUJ. Unlike the old system that doesn’t guarantee that all passengers pay the right fare, or even pay at all, the AFCS is made so that travelers will pay upon setting foot inside the bus with the correct fare according to their destination. The POS then dispenses a receipt to authenticate the fare.
Key Functions & Features
To understand more about the how the GK AFCS works, here are its key Functions and features:
Route Management System
If you have experienced riding in a PUV in metro Cebu, then you probably know that sometimes the routing system can be complex. Some vehicles have the same end destination but use a different route. The fare would naturally depend on where you started riding up to where you wanted to disembark. This can sometimes cause delays on the end of the operators and drivers and sometimes can produce a confused customer. With the Route Management System in the AFCS, it’s easier and faster to determine the fare because of its fare matrix.
Store and Forward Capability
One difficulty in PUVs is keeping track of sales, passenger numbers, and transaction details. Through the Point of Sales (POS) app, each transaction will be stored and forwarded to the back-end for more accurate data for the day-to-day transactions of each vehicle.
Cashless Payment via RFID or QR
More and more people prefer to set their monthly travel budget in a reloadable travel card, which is what our RFIDs are made for. The GoodKredit RFIDs are cards travelers can use instead of cash. They can reload with cash in the GoodKredit App, via QR, and on Negosyo Load on Facebook.
How the POS App Works
The Point of Sales (POS) app is included in the system that GoodKredit Provides. This machine has a system that needs to be set by PUV operators and will collect data that will be sent to the back-end of the PUV company/organization.
The POS app can do the following:
Preset Fare Mode
This mode enables both commuters and operators to make easier and faster transactions. The operators can set a fair value by choosing from 6 pre-set values in the POS app. These values are displayed as buttons on the screen. So, when a passenger boards the vehicle, they will be informed of the fare they need to pay based on their destination, and the operator can simply choose and tap from the choices before dispensing a receipt.

“From-To” Fares
This feature allows operators to set a fair value by choosing a passenger IN and a passenger OUT. Automatic calculation of fares based on the difference between the distance of each station, and the fare matrix defined in the merchant web portal. No more mental calculations and ambiguous rates!
Advantages to GoodKredit’s AFCS
The AFCS solution is an innovative solution that provides a wide range of advantages for both transport services and passengers. Here are some of the key advantages it offers:
Can transact even when there is no signal from mobile telcos
Fare reload is already available in 99% of all cities and municipalities in PH; all your dealers nationwide can confidently push more Jeep sales without fear of complaints
Very crucial for passengers, internal audit purposes, and the banks who finance these jeeps
Benefits both truck manufacturers/dealers and PUV MP operators
Jeeps don’t run on rails/fixed-track, so the operator needs maximum flexibility & interoperability
Our AFCS can sell telco loads, giving operators additional complementary income.
Final Thoughts
The daily commute might just be a small portion of what we deal with in our daily hustle, but it can cause a ripple of inconvenience when the PUVs we choose to ride in are not up to DOTr, LTFRB, LTO, and OTC standards. Choosing the right transport services will assure you that your travels will be easy, fast, and convenient.
GoodKredit Philippines has provided AFCS solutions to multiple transport services that you might have already experienced traveling in. We aim to make innovations for transportation services as well as provide technological solutions for other businesses.
