Goodbye Slides, Hello Vids: Google's New Tool for Effortless Work Videos
Imagine a world where creating videos for work is as easy as building a slide deck. That's the future Google envisions with its upcoming tool, Vids. Forget fancy editing software or hiring videographers – Vids aims to empower anyone to become a video creator, streamlining communication and collaboration within businesses.
While established platforms like YouTube dominate the entertainment video space, Vids tackles a different niche: the professional world. Here, the focus isn't on Hollywood-style productions but on practical, everyday communication needs. Think explainer videos for clients, training materials for employees, or quick team updates.
"Easy" is the operative word for Vids, according to Kristina Behr, Google's VP of product management. Their motto? "If you can make a slide, you can make a video in Vids." No prior video editing experience is required.
You can pull in assets like images and documents from your Drive or elsewhere. Unlike a static slide deck, though, you assemble them in a sequential order, forming a timeline for your video.
Next comes the storytelling magic. You can record yourself delivering a voiceover or even film a short video segment to be edited into the final product. The result might resemble a polished PowerPoint presentation – but with the added power of audio and visuals to enhance engagement.
But Vids offers more than just basic video creation. Google's AI assistant, Gemini, takes things a step further. Feeling stuck for ideas?? Prompt Gemini to generate a draft storyboard or script for your video. Need a voiceover but don't have a narrator ready? Gemini's text-to-speech feature comes to the rescue, converting your script into an audio narration with various voice options. Vids even provides a library of stock footage and audio clips to enhance your creation without needing to film everything yourself.
Collaboration is another key element. Similar to other Google Workspace tools, Vids allows for seamless teamwork. Share your video with colleagues, and they can leave comments, provide feedback, or even edit the video directly within the platform. No need for endless email exchanges or version control headaches!
While Vids isn't the only player in the game – competitors like Loom and Descript offer similar video creation tools – Google has a distinct advantage: integration with its extensive existing ecosystem.

Interestingly, there's one notable absence – any mention of YouTube integration. Despite being owned by Google, the two platforms serve distinct purposes. As Behr explains, "the audience and use cases are quite different." Vids is a work tool, designed specifically for internal business communication, while YouTube caters to a broader, public audience.
Google plans to launch Vids in a public beta this summer. Early access users have already discovered the potential of this new tool. Videos tend to be short and focused, often under three minutes. Typical use cases include project pitches, training materials, updates, and even celebratory team videos.
By carving out a separate space for Vids, Google emphasizes its value as more than just an extension of presentations. It's a new way to share information, fostering collaboration and clear communication within the business world. While the future of any Google product remains unpredictable, Vids aspires to join the ranks of timeless staples like Docs, Sheets, and Slides in the productivity landscape.
