A Heartfelt Goodbye to Ratan Tata: The Architect of Modern India’s Industrial Growth
As an ex-Tata employee, it is with a heavy heart that I reflect on the sad demise of Ratan Tata, a visionary who not only built businesses but also inspired generations with his unwavering principles. His leadership at Tata Group revolutionized the Indian corporate landscape, and his contributions to India’s progress are immeasurable.
Ratan Tata’s journey as the head of Tata Group marked a period of transformation. He inherited a legacy but took it to unparalleled heights, not just by expanding globally but by introducing disruptive innovations that were rooted in India’s growth story. He believed in doing what was right, not just what was easy, and this was reflected in the strict adherence to Tata’s code of conduct, which emphasises ethics, integrity, and responsibility. These values were never compromised, even when faced with tough challenges, and they became the hallmark of the Tata Group's corporate identity.

One of his most groundbreaking contributions was the development of the Indica, the first car designed and manufactured entirely in India. It wasn’t just about launching a product but about instilling pride in Indian capabilities, making a statement that we could compete on a global stage. This was followed by the acquisition of international brands like Jaguar and Land Rover, positioning Tata Motors as a global force in the automotive industry.
Equally remarkable was his foresight in expanding Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), which began as a small division and, under his leadership, transformed into a global IT powerhouse. TCS became one of the largest contributors to the Tata Group’s revenue and put India on the map as a global leader in the IT services sector.
Under his stewardship, Tata Group’s revenue grew more than 40 times, and profits increased 50-fold. His legacy is not just in numbers but in the countless lives he touched through his business ventures, philanthropic initiatives, and personal humility.
Ratan Tata's passing leaves a void that will be hard to fill, but his ideals, values, and contributions will continue to inspire future generations of leaders. He wasn’t just an industrialist; he was a beacon of integrity and innovation. His belief in doing good while doing well will forever remain the foundation upon which the Tata Group thrives.
Rest in peace, Ratan Tata. India has truly lost a legend, and this is a goodbye we never wanted
