Goodbye Good Girl Biz Tip #6: Bring yourself to work!

Yes, I know the boss told you to do this project and that project, and you know that you need to complete that work. But isn't there some part of you that needs to come out IN those projects?

I am irrepressible. I have to be - I have learned to challenge myself always to take the authentic path no matter how difficult, because that path is the one that takes me places and makes me have fun while I'm doing it.

So when I was on incoming calls in a Call Center, I used my ability to read peoples' emotional setpoints over the phone - and I connected with them. I used my natural warmth, my ability to slow down or speed up my delivery depending on whether they came from clipped-and-fast New York, or the slow-and-quiet South.

I always had the longest call times, and I always had the highest sales!

I never got in trouble for those long call times because no one objects to making money, right? So, I created repeat customers and I brought a good day to those people I served, which made my day feel worthwhile!

You must bring yourself to work. Your personal self. Your personal strengths. You must find a way to make some portion of your work fun, or you need to get the heck out!

You see, when it comes to building a life of quality, it's about us - not always about the work. So many of us do not do business that is what our heart loves to do. But we can't get that time back, and being miserable day in and day out is something that really stinks! So, one of the powerful ways I know of is to bring myself - my personality, my strengths, my curiosity, my desire to learn and to connect with others - into the workplace, no matter where that workplace is.

Ask yourself:

Who am I? What do I love to BE, as well as to do? Do I love to be quiet, to connect, to be the writer, the helper, the problem-solver?

Where can I use these natural strengths in my work today? Let yourself do this! It may be 10 minutes, or it may be 2 hours, but whatever the length of time you will find that the quality of the rest of the work improves as a result, because you are not slogging through your time having no fun at all.

Try it out! Bring yourself to work!
