Goodbye Good Girl Biz Tip #11: If you're a woman, this is the question that will change your life...no, not the one in the picture

This morning I was in a marvelous meeting with a company I am doing Contract work for over the next 6 weeks. They are employee-owned, and I really REALLY like them!

At the Friday meeting we are encouraged to "nominate" people for being recognized. In truth, we just recognize 'em right then and there and it's seriously uplifting - far more than I would have thought, because I'm burned from having been in regular corporate environments that are stuck adhering emotionally to the top-down structure.

If you have been there, you know what I mean.

I "nominated" the guy who trained me before going out on leave and one of the top dogs turned right back around and recognized me for having just seamlessly stepped in and for making the whole thing work.

I spoke to him a little bit later when he came to my area to circle back and emphasize the little things I had done that make a big difference.

Now, this lovely man has no idea that I am an infrastructure queen, a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, and that this is only completely my jam. Plus, he's a top dog and a guy, so he assumes that people doing the Admin work that I'm currently doing don't know very much.

WRONG!

I thanked him, I agreed with him and told this guy that being an infrastructure fiend is my thing and I have been preaching this kind of stuff forever but most places they don't recognize it, so his comment is much appreciated.

And then I had afterburn. For about an hour I dinged myself: "Oh my God, Lori, that was so ungracious! You are an idiot! Ohmygod, you should really go impress on him that you are grateful instead of trying to impress him or something about what you know and who you are!"

It stung!

And then I sat back and asked myself THE question: "Am I feeling weird because I dared to stand on the same level of importance, knowledge and professionalism as he?"

And when the answer from inside came back, "YES!", my need to apologize to him, or go tell him how very much - again! - I appreciated his comments (which weren't that huge, truly!), went away.

Before you give in to feeling that you did something "wrong", ask yourself if what you are feeling is due to you having the audacity to be an ADULT PROFESSIONAL WOMAN who HAS AN OPINION and ISN'T GOING TO STAND BACK FROM OWNING YOUR POWER!

And if you are a man in a position of power, don't assume you know who people are by the position they currently hold. I once knew a guy in a call center who was working on his Ph.D. in Human Resources.

Assume people know what you know - and come back down from there, but only if you have to.
