A good understanding of Liner Terms. There are 4 main types of Liner Terms:

  • FIO: Free In/Out; When used from the carrier's point of view, this term means that the customer (shipper or consignee) is responsible for the costs of loading (In) and unloading (Out) at the port of loading and port of discharge, respectively. The company's responsibility and costs begin when the cargo passes over the ship.
  • FILO: Free In/Liner Out; When used from the carrier's point of view, it means that the shipper is responsible for the costs of loading (In) at the port of loading, and the carrier is responsible for the costs of unloading (Out) at the port of discharge.
  • LIFO: Liner In/Free Out; When used from the carrier's point of view, this means that the carrier is responsible for the costs of loading (In) at the port of loading, and the consignee is responsible for the costs of unloading (Out) at the port of discharge.
  • FLT: Full Liner Terms; When used from the carrier's point of view, this means that the carrier is responsible for the costs of loading (In) and unloading (Out) at the port of loading and the port of discharge, and the carrier's responsibility and costs start/end at the docks where the cargo is made available.
