Good Teachers of All Colors

I vividly recall a pivotal moment with Mr. Zolder, my fifth-grade teacher, when he pulled me aside to affirm my potential. His words of encouragement continue to resonate, highlighting the profound impact teachers can have on their students, regardless of the teacher's background, color, or race. I am black, he is white.

Effective school leadership depends on having exceptional teachers who foster positive relationships with their students. These relationships are crucial for academic, social, and emotional growth. As a principal, I've seen firsthand the transformative power of teachers who connect deeply with their students. Reflecting on my own education, I am grateful for the teachers who inspired and challenged me, shaping my path to success.

Parents entrust their children to teachers each day, expecting them to provide a safe and supportive environment while instilling knowledge and skills for future success. Research underscores the importance of the teacher-student relationship as the primary factor influencing educational outcomes. Great teachers excel in building strong connections with their students, fostering mutual respect and understanding.

Recruiting and retaining effective teachers is essential for the success of schools and the well-being of society. Teachers leave lasting impressions on their students, shaping their futures in profound ways. Regardless of specific lessons, students remember the impact of their teachers' guidance. As adults, we recognize the pivotal role teachers play in shaping our lives and society as a whole.

Of all my (9) positions in education, "Teacher" was the best I've ever had. It's the ONLY assignment that literally brought tears to my eyes on the last day of school. And twenty years later, it is such a blessing running into former students and seeing their greatness in adulthood. But mostly, the simple "thank you" teachers receive twenty years later cannot be measured.
