"Good Show" or, "Bad Show"

"Good Show" or, "Bad Show"

As I’ve whined about a bit I just got back from a week in Annaheim.

A few years ago I took a bunch of classes with “Disney University” which trains corporate clients on service, creativity, leadership among other areas.

One exercise was between day 1 and day 2 they wanted us to spend time in the park looking for examples of “Good Show”? and, “Bad Show.”

That’s Theater Speak (used by Disney throughout) such as “on stage” or “off stage,” etc in this case to describe various actions within the park.

So, obviously “Good Show” is something that went well.

“Bad Show” obviously not so much.

The Disney parks have often been thought of as a “Gold Standard” for service with organizations with a large number of customers coming through.

Well,

How did they do on this trip.

Well, a lot of “Good Show” and, at the same time more “Bad Show” that I would expect from previous experiences.

With my Martial Arts Wealth members we’ve done behind the scenes experiences with Disney both in Annaheim and in Orlando several times.

Everything from “Disney University” experiences to “Off Stage” tours of the underground in Orlando and extended discussions with high level staff on how they achieve their results.

More, to come one what they did well and poorly.

However, my first comment is the same one I make with Starbucks is that they have gradually been watering down their grooming and uniform standards.??? I think it’s a big mistake to give into employee pressure and lower standards of behavior, grooming or dress.

I’ve seem Starbucks do a worse job than Disney on that one, but Disney seems to be trying to catch up.

We had several “bad show experiences”

On the other hand with D23 my side-by-side comparable was Comi-Con.??

It’s NOT a high bar.

Comi-Con sort of runs on the principle of how poorly can we treat our customers and still sell-out each year.

A LOT of really horrible experiences.

D23 was MUCH, MUCH better than this admittedly super low bar.

However, all of these lessons are extremely useful for martial arts schools.? Helpful to solve the biggest challenge that most schools have (and, no it’s not marketing.)

The biggest problem is that they THINK they’re a great teacher and, yet Students are dropping out as quickly as they are coming in.??? Most don’t even track this well or effectively.?? If you don’t track it well, you can’t fix it.

Anyway, more to come.
