Key highlights from this year’s findings:

  • Cost-of-living pressures: Last year’s Good Report highlighted the tough impact of the cost-of-living crisis on ethical businesses, and unfortunately, this hasn’t improved. If anything it's worse. This year, 58% of ethical businesses report a decline in consumer spending, compared to 39% last year. Consumers are also feeling the strain, with many saying they are unable to live as sustainably as they would like due to financial constraints.

  • Support systems: As we reported last year, business networks remain a vital resource for ethical business owners, with mentorship and shared resources proving invaluable. However, finding equally sustainable suppliers continues to be a challenge, with only 37% of businesses knowing where to find them. P.S. We have an incredible network of over 600 good companies in London offering a range of different services which we can connect you with. And also check out the new Expert Directory from The WIP to find values-aligned freelancers.
  • The conscious consumer evolves: People are adopting more sustainable behaviours, such as buying secondhand clothing, which also save them money though high-cost changes like switching to EVs remain out of reach.

  • Challenges of visibility: Ethical businesses need to expand both their physical and online presence to connect with more consumers, as 72% of people find identifying ethical businesses in person harder than online. P.S. This is of course where we come in! Make sure you've download the free In Good Company app on iPhone or Android or head over to ingood.app to find places near you.
  • Green claims: When it comes to ethical and sustainable claims, the majority are more likely to trust small businesses and conscious consumers are more likely to trust brands with an ethical accreditation or certification. Certified businesses agree - 81% think it increases trust.

In a world where every choice matters, supporting local, ethical businesses whenever we can is not just a statement but really makes a difference.
