Do you know that over 1 million books had been self-published by 2017 in both digital and print formats? This is nothing but proving Enders Analysis’s insight into self-publishing will only grow more attractive back in 2016 after finding out that 40% of the top-selling e-books on Amazon were self-published. Bowker’s recent report also shows that self-publishing grew at a rate of 40 percent in 2018. So, it is evident that self-publishing shows no signs of slowing down. This is extremely exciting for aspiring authors and authors who wants to have full ownership of the rights and royalties of their creative production alike. 

On the other hand, self-publishing has attracted many creatives by its growing popularity and success. Hence today, we come across with crowded and highly competitive marketplace where authors work even harder to stand out. This is why it is getting increasingly important to choose the right publishing company for authors, and this is also why we started The Good Quote Publishing.

A few years ago, I had a great chat with my good friend and great business mind, Dean Elkholy, Diply, about The Good Agency and the community we created through various Instagram accounts, including The Good Quote. He encouraged me to step into the publishing world and start up The Good Quote Publishing to introduces inspiring authors to our community built through the love of literature.  

How did we sell over 10,000 copies of Walk with Wings?

It wasn’t long after that; I created a social media post and advertisement to see any young, unpublished authors we have in our community. I also encouraged them to tag any aspiring authors that they know in the comments.This is how our paths crossed with Tene Edwards. We were fortunate enough to receive her magnificent transcript of Walk with Wings. 

She was the creator of this fantastic piece of art, and the rest was up to us at that point. We immediately got working on supporting her vision to build and grow her book on social media. Soon after, Tene Edward’s personal Instagram followers reached 40K from 5K, and the Instagram page for Walk with Wings grew to 35K in just a year . Nonetheless, this massive growth on Instagram reflected the book sales, and Tene’s books sold over 10,000 copies. But how did we do this? 

Let’s start with fact-checking here. It is not that easy to reach sale figures for self-published books in general. However, research suggests that the average digital-only self-published book sells about 250 copies in its lifetime and the average self publishes printed book sells fewer than 200 copies. So, from a very optimist point of view, an average book in the self-publishing world sells a total of 500 copies in its lifetime. However, we are talking about selling over 10,000 copies of Walk with Wings here. This might be seen as a distant dream for some aspiring authors out there, but we made it real! 

 After signing Tene Edwards to The Good Quote Publishing, we first ensured that the book is available on popular retailers on the internet such as Amazon, Kinokuniya, Barnes, and Noble . The followers can easily access the book regardless of which part of the world they live in, from Korea to the Middle East, the US to Europe. Then instantly put together the following plan to raise awareness and sales for the book.

Here are the main steps we followed for Walk with Wings:-

  • We encouraged people to leave reviews on the platforms like Amazon and Good Reads. These reviews helped us moving up the book’s ranking in the mentioned platforms. We also included those reviews in our social media content plans and used them on various platforms.We have created an extensive content plan for both Tene’s personal Instagram and the Instagram account of Walk with Wings.
  • We arranged professional photo shooting to capture good quality, effective shots in line with our content plan.
  • We used the power of our community and got in touch with celebrities. As a result, Tene’s work was shared by Khloe Kardashian, Nene Leaks, and many other celebrity accounts and reached bigger audiences. 
  • We haven’t left out any possible opportunity to market the book, from using Reels on Instagram to interactive Instagram stories. This includes taking instant shots from the books to participate in more extensive conversations on social media platforms.
  • Managed paid advertisements on traditional and digital channels. 

Self-publishing authors are almost there to become the most significant part of the publishing ecosystem. But don’t let this discourage you and give up your dreams of becoming a published author.
