Good Performance in Bad Times - Tips for what's in

During this unusual times we need to see performance in context. In this series of tips I will focus on leaders - leaders of others and leaders of self. From time to time we need reminders of what is in and what is out. Most businesses are in crisis mode - think about the recent announcements in the press and predictions from economic analysts about the mining and financial services industries, to mention just two. Focus on positive people performance - and by doing so create some good habits as well. People's performance has an impact on the whole system of performance. If the "people" system is out of sync, it causes a disconnect affecting performance.

This is what's in: the people focus

  1. Create an empathetic performance reality - understand all performance environments are different for everyone.
  2. Focus on the well-being of everyone, yours too! Talk freely to trusted friends and colleagues about feelings and stressors - or talk anonymously to a professional.
  3. Listen to what employees/others are not saying but don't jump to assumptions and wrong conclusions.
  4. Strengthen relationships - understand what people are going through with 'working from home' challenges and those returning to offices.
  5. Encourage innovation, creative problem solving and new ideas by creating space and time for free-talking discussions to reset.
  6. Be patient and kind - the old saying: "do unto others as you want done to yourself" is still true.
  7. Remember to say "thank you" - better still, write a personal note.
