The Good Oil on Local Travel Insights

“I’m coming to visit your home town for the first time, what should I see or do?”

For the passionate local, that’s a bit like asking a DJ to create a playlist for an upcoming party or event - your mind would just spin - where do you even start?? Who’s the party for?? What’s the occasion?? What’s the vibe?

Thank you Nicole for sharing the great case study of THE BLUE Hotel Bondi which inspired this #hoteltech post.

As a lifelong* traveller who’s been an enthusiastic (and voluntary) tour guide for friends and friends-of-friends visiting Sydney, I used to absolutely LOVE showcasing the very best sights and tastes of Sydney town.

Back in ‘89, my first job in hotels was as a concierge at the Sydney Airport Hilton, where it was literally my job to be aware of and recommend the very best (or most suitable) places to see, experience, or eat ‘n’ drink for our time-crunched airport hotel guests.? What a buzz.

And buzz is exactly the feeling I had when I first learned about Journey Makr.

Sadly, many hotels today completely miss the boat when it comes to showing they care to share the delights of their local neighbourhood.? While other hotels do their best to curate a visual insight into their city destination via Instagram or Google maps.

It’s hospitality 101, but giving your guests every reason to shout for joy (and positively review) their hotel stay experience should be the guiding principle in every hospitality accommodation business today.? Almost nothing else matters.

Airbnb shrewdly captured the incredible value of a local guidebook produced by their savvy hosts and elevate the guest stay experience in the process.? And that’s essentially what Journey Makr is, but at scale, to provide a platform for hoteliers and their local community to leverage for a richer guest journey.
