?The United States Finally Speaks Out Against Deep Sea Mining

In a joint statement with France, the White House reaffirmed their commitment to taking “a precautionary approach to potential mining of marine minerals.”

The U.S. has been sidelined from the deep sea mining conversation since Ronald Reagan refused to sign the UN Law of the Sea Treaty in 1982, claiming that the agreement would limit future seabed mining.


U.S. Rolls Out First National Ocean Biodiversity Strategy

The National Ocean Biodiversity Strategy is a three-part plan to create a more inclusive, evidence-based network of protection in U.S. waters. This strategy is a part of Biden's 2021 goal to “conserve, connect, and restore” at least 30 percent of U.S. lands and waters by 2030, following the guidelines set by the historic High Seas Treaty he signed in 2023.


Latin America Leading The Way On Ocean Preservation

Ecuador, Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica have agreed to conserve the largest block of marine protected areas in the world, signing the “San Jose Declaration.” The project protects 500,000 square kilometers in the Eastern Tropical Pacific.


Peru Becomes Joins The Alliance To #DefendTheDeep

On World Ocean Day, Peru announced their support for a moratorium on deep sea mining, becoming the 27th International Seabed Authority (ISA) member state to say no to this extractive industry, and the 8th Latin America and Caribbean member.
