Memphis City Council enacts five ordinances for police reform and public safety

Last week, the City Council passed five of six ordinances related to public safety, including more traffic stop data transparency, banning unmarked police cars for routine stops, and establishing independent review processes for the use of excessive force.

An additional ordinance aimed at driving equality advocated for by Decarcerate Memphis will be held until another Council meeting on March 21st.

Memphis Library Foundation receives $85K grant toward literacy program

In early March, the Memphis Public Libraries received an $85K grant from International Paper to support literacy in youth and childhood development programs.

Part of this funding will go towards establishing a new Teen Innovation Center (TIC) at the Frayser library to encourage literacy, technology, and social activities. It will also support the Explore Memphis program, providing free books and interactive events at each Memphis Library branch.

Shelby County Commission approves $5M to study reparations program in Memphis and Shelby County

In late February 2023, the Shelby County Commission agreed to provide $5M to fund a study that will analyze the disparities between Black and white people living in the county.

This study will be used to decide where future funding should be allocated in order to increase Black wealth, which has remained far below white wealth nationwide.
