A round up of what's going on to make our communities a better place for all

Good news, reviews & updates

5th May 2023

Hi Everyone,

The past year has taught me that there are so many people doing amazing work to make the world a better place for everyone. With the publication of CRIMINAL, I was lucky enough to connect with some of you, and since then, I've been trying to find a way to share news about all the campaigns, causes, organisations and individuals who are doing incredible work.

Every couple of weeks, I'll share the books I'm reading and the podcasts I'm listening to, as well as spotlighting some of the work going on, on the ground. The focus will be primarily on criminal justice reform, but as there is so much crossover with other areas, sometimes I'll branch out.

What I'm reading -

The Good Prison Officer - Inside Perspectives (published 5th May)

I'm really looking forward to getting my pre-ordered copy of this - "This book offers a solution-focused and strengths-based guide to becoming an effective Prison Officer. Written and developed by a collection of ex-prisoners who are all now professionals, practitioners, and educators in the criminal justice field, the book draws on lived experience and the diverse literature on prisons and penal policy to explore good and bad examples of professional practice."

What I'm listening to -

The Happy Employee Podcast

Ok, so I'm not listening to my episode, but this week there's a great chat with Jo Clarke (CPSL Mind), where she talks about mental health and menopause. This is a great series and Mike O'Hara at Start Within facilitates really interesting conversations around mental health.

In about four hours, I'm jumping on a plane back to the UK, where I'll be delivering a number of talks over the next two weeks, using the book, CRIMINAL, as the basis. I'm really excited to meet with the NAOPV members at their AGM and connect with some of the volunteers who go into prisons to 'bring the outside in'. You can learn more about them here.

That's it for now. If you want to connect, please drop me a message. To learn more about me and what I'm writing about at the moment, you can click here. Or, if you have info, advice or guidance on some great work that I might not yet know about, let me know!

Have a great weekend,

Ange
