Good News for King Salmon Limits

Andre Burchette shares a smile and his winning 47.8 lb king salmon landed at Waterfall Resort Alaska

Good news!?The sportfishing group, SEAGO, representing sport and charter operations and fishing guides in Southeast Alaska, met with the Alaska Trollers Association and Territorial Sportsmen Inc. at the State Board of Fisheries to determine a fair and safe way to preserve the King Salmon fishery long term for all parties.?The result? We have a 3-year commitment to keep our Chinook sportfishing limits open all season for a minimum of 3 seasons to come.?This should equate to NO more closures in August!

What does this mean??Specifically:

  • June limits: 1 per day bag limit, 3 King Salmon per year (for the season)
  • July and August: King fishing will remain open all season although there may be reductions on the annual limit starting in July.

Pat Frazier with her husband Claude upon winning Waterfall Resort Alaska's King of King Salmon Tournament

For those guests enrolled in our King of King Salmon Tournament, this means more chances to win!?In June, if you are able to land a king a day for 3 days, you’ll have 3 chances to win King of the Day (KOD) and be entered in the drawing for the brand-new Ford F-150 truck.?Even if you don’t win, you’ve had the joy of catching that delicious wild-caught salmon for your freezer and the enjoyment of eating it when you return home.

Salmon fishing in Alaska, and especially in Ketchikan and Southeast Alaska, is renowned.?The salmon return to Waterfall Resort and our waters off the west side of Prince of Wales Island each summer in great numbers. They’re smart, but our expert guides are smart, too, and know where the kings may be hanging out each day.?Learn more about our fishing and how to use our mooching technique by clicking this link.

Our goal Is to assure that our guests return home with as much fish, cleaned, cut, frozen and carefully packaged, as possible for you to enjoy eating when you return home.?Check out our recipes from Chef Meagan, our Director of Hospitality.

Add to that the unique adventure of staying at our destination fishing resort, a renovated, historical cannery right on the fishing grounds, and you experience an adventure that will stay in your memory lifelong.??

Catch Us on TV!

We have two debuts coming up the first week of April:

Yes, NBC’s Kelly Clarkson, one of the top talk shows internationally. It’s rated the #3 Daytime talk show in the world averaging 1.9M viewers daily on-air!?They just won the 2021 Emmy Award for Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show, beating out daytime veteran Ellen DeGeneres.?In their 3rd season, the past 2 years Kelly Clarkson has won Emmy Awards as talk show host.

So how did we get on the show??Kelly interviews two brothers who did not know each other existed and crossed paths discovering they were brothers.?Kelly loves Alaska and the two brothers love fishing, so what could be more natural to surprise them??The network decided to award Ed and Randy Waites trips to Waterfall Resort Alaska!?They will be bringing their sons to fish Alaska with us this season.

Shawn Bean, Executive Director of SFTV, shares a smile and his king salmon landed at Steamboat Bay Fishing Club in Alaska.

SFTV, if you remember, premiered Waterfall Resort last year on the Discovery Channel.?They had such fun that they decided to return only to Steamboat Bay Fishing Club, our sister luxury resort on Noyes Island.?

Capt. Bryan "Bear" Holeman from Key West accompanied Shawn Bean, Executive Director, and his crew.?You may recognize that name from Bear Fishing Charters, a family-owned business with over 40 years of experience, similar to our own head guide Everett but on opposite corners of the US!?

“We had a great time at Steamboat Bay with Bear,” shares Shawn Bean, Director of the show.?“Bear loved getting to know your head guide Everett and fishing with him. He even ended up purchasing some of his form-line-design Native art.”

Everett, a native Haida with Alaskan fishing experience that is lifelong, is also an artist whose artwork is featured in our lodge.?He’s been a fishing guide with the Waterfall Group since our beginning, and this year is Waterfall Resort’s 40th anniversary.

Set you viewing calendars for April 2, for the Discovery Channel’s SFTV and April 4 for the Kelly Clarkson Show.?We’ll see you there!

Chef Meagan: Teriyaki Cola Coho

While you’re gearing up to fill your fish boxes over the summer, keep this fantastic recipe in mind for when you get home from your trip. It’s fast, easy, and a showcase for your?silver salmon fillets.

The secret is in the sauce, naturally—in this case, derived from a?rich teriyaki marinade?spiked with?Coca-Cola. The depth of flavor arises the seasoning:?minced?garlic and ginger?laced with sesame oil, brown sugar, and rice wine vinegar.

Steps from kitchen to table? Mix the marinade in a bowl, pour it into a ziplock bag, add the salmon, refrigerate for half an hour, then whip up the sauce on the stove top and pop the fillets in a frying pan.

Once cooked to perfection, garnish with green onions and sesame seeds. Serve with?fluffy white rice, lemon wedges, and a tossed green salad or stir-fried veggies. As for beverages, I tend to pair this dish with?chilled sake?or ice-cold Japanese beer.
