Good News: Congratulations to Students for Completing Courses Early
This is part of a series of messages to Renton Prep Families during COVID-19 for transparency and documentation.
?Dear Renton Prep Families,
In the midst of a global pandemic, social and emotional challenges, political unrest, and turbulence, we are so excited to celebrate some more great news!
You may have seen four of our students highlighted on KOMO News on December 26, 2020 for making major strides and accelerating in core content during the pandemic. You can see the story by clicking the image below.
It's not just four students though. We want to give a shout out to the many students who have completed one or more, either semester or full year courses, of academic core content early and are moving on to new challenges! Our semester doesn’t even officially end until January 22, 2021. Many of these students were already finished by the middle or last week of December.
With so many unknowns this year and staying indoors, we wanted to give students a chance of something more to look forward to and challenges to reach for. When asked what inspired him to accelerate to complete all his full-year courses early, Amanuel Nega said: "I had a course that I was looking forward to doing, which gave me the motivation to finish it sooner." He chose to take an elective, Game Design, with an interest in a future career in Computer Science. He wanted to take 9th Grade English Language Arts to become a better storyteller, knowing that game design requires an element of storytelling.
Each of these students have been given the option to choose accelerated courses. We have a group of middle school students who have demonstrated they are ready to take high school course work for the second half of the year in one or more courses and 12 have elected to take the challenge of taking the first semester of 9th Grade English Language Arts. While this wasn't in our original plan, we are excited that there was so much interest for us to be able to adapt and offer it. They demonstrated this through evidence of their work ethic and self-regulation and through their demonstration of core content knowledge as seen on their Nationally Normed Standardized Tests. It has always been important to our school to allow students to accelerate when they are ready. We have been committed to offering the same even during a global pandemic.
Please celebrate their hard work and follow-through!
