Good morning,
DID YOU KNOW? US GDP expanded at a historically high rate of 33.1% in the third quarter of 2020 after dropping 31.4% in the second quarter. It would have had to grow 45% to recover fully, so we still have a way to go and much of this growth/recovery was fueled by TRILLIONS of dollars of Federal stimulus money. Similarly, GDP for the eurozone expanded by 12.7% in the third quarter, compared with the previous three months...... it contracted by 11.8% in the second quarter (It would have to have grown 14% to fully recover). France's economy grew 18.2% in the 3rd quarter after contracting 13.7% in the 2nd quarter. (CNBC)
DID YOU KNOW? Over 200 devices that use ultraviolet light to sanitize surfaces are to be installed across London’s sprawling tube network. The technology would be deployed on the handrails of 110 escalators over the next few weeks. The devices utilizes a “small dynamo” to produce power from the handrail’s movement, which in turn powers the UV bulb used to sanitize its surface. (CNBC)
DID YOU KNOW? Walmart is turning four of its stores into laboratories that test ways to turn the company’s huge physical footprint into a more powerful edge for e-commerce. At the stores, employees will use digital tools, store design features and different strategies that could speed up restocking shelves and fulfilling online orders. This is maybe an indicator of how bricks-and-mortar retail will evolve into e-commerce. (CNBC)
DID YOU KNOW? States are becoming very competitive. Usually the tax breaks are given to large corporations establishing job-creating entities, but now if you move to Southwest Michigan and you’re not a Michigan resident, the Cornerstone Alliance is giving people up to $15,000 for moving to Southwest Michigan. If you move from another state to Berrien County and are looking to buy a home in St. Joseph, you’d qualify for a loan of up to $15,000.
DID YOU KNOW? The University of Liverpool has established a spin-out to focus on the commercialization of research related to road defects. The broad goal of Robotiz3d Ltd, as it’s known, is to use artificial intelligence and robotics to improve how issues such as cracks and potholes on roads are detected and then fixed. The company will look to develop its Autonomous Road Repair System, or ARRES. (CNBC)
DID YOU KNOW? Trash systems that use vacuum suction and pneumatic tubes to whoosh garbage from people's homes and sidewalk bins have been around for decades, but are gaining new traction in the U.S. These systems — which currently serve Disney World and Manhattan's Roosevelt Island — get municipal garbage trucks off the streets and offer cleaner and greener waste removal. The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is soliciting plans to build a vacuum-tube-based underground garbage system for Polo Grounds Towers, a 4,000-resident complex in Harlem. No garbage or garbage trucks on the streets? HEAVEN! (Axios)
DID YOU KNOW? Video cameras mounted on city streets — and connected to the right software and technology — could one day be a gold standard for urban traffic management. The nascent technology could be used to bill vehicles that park in commercial spaces, fine vehicles that double-park, and help cities place commercial parking spaces in the best locations. (AXIOS)
