The good life
In the July issue of the?Culture Insight & Innovation Update, we spotlight a recent report with Music Victoria and Morwenna Collett, titled ‘Improving the accessibility of live music venues in Melbourne’. We also highlight the experiences of Black disabled creators and professionals in the UK music industry, equity in the US media and entertainment industry and a podcast about evaluation principles in practice.?
A message from our Managing Director, Tandi Palmer Williams :
Hello!
This issue is dedicated to all of you who are working at widening access to culture, creativity and community.
As we look around - it’s clear there is a shift underway. Already this year we have been involved in six different projects championing people with disability and their right to access. Each one is achieving important progress, and it’s only a tiny window into the work underway across our sectors.
Thank you to the artists, advocates and organisations driving this. It’s vital work for our society - and it’s not easy.
As Harriet Parsons writes in the Editor’s introduction to the latest?Platform Paper?on Diversity and Inclusion:
‘Access is just another way of describing “the good life”, because it is the essence of belonging and community. The choices we make—economically, geographically, linguistically, socially, architecturally, technologically—put Australian culture in or out of reach. Ultimately, access and its associated values of diversity, equity and inclusion, are about ending discrimination by examining very closely the way we treat each other in all of our relationships.’
Happy Disability Pride Month. Here’s to a future with more empathy, stronger relationships, greater access, and building the ‘good life’ in Australia for more people.

Improving the accessibility of live music venues in Melbourne
Patternmakers was honoured to be asked by?Music Victoria?and?Morwenna Collett?to evaluate a music venue accessibility program in Victoria. The program involved digital and physical audits, training and education, and creation of resources to help music venues identify and prioritise access improvements.
The Accessible Music Venues project assisted venues to build their knowledge and identify ways to provide Deaf and Disabled audiences, artists and staff more equitable access to Melbourne's live music industry.
The report is now available —?click here to?read if you're interested in the recommendations (whether that be as a venue, a musician or a local government).
