Good leaders take the opportunity to learn every chance they get
Early in my career, I learned that when presented with a new opportunity – start with yes. Even if there are aspects of the position that aren’t familiar, it’s an excellent chance to develop and learn.
That’s what I’d tell my 22-year-old self.
The uncomfortable feeling that these opportunities give you is a sign that you’re stretching outside your comfort zone, and that’s a great way to grow as a leader.
For example, a number of years ago, I was asked to become the manager of our Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant. I hadn’t worked in one of our plants for about a decade, and my prior experience did not include some of the traditional roles that typically lead to a plant manager position. I had gained valuable experience in a number of engineering and corporate staff positions, true – but I hadn’t run a production department as many plant managers do. But I took a deep breath and accepted the assignment.
Upon arriving at the plant, I realized there were a number of things I wasn’t intimately familiar with, like the plant culture and production system. Plus, we needed to make changes in the line rate – a big job. I had a lot to learn. I started by asking a lot of questions. My willingness to learn, along with the assistant plant manager’s realization that I valued his experience and advice, helped me learn how to best manage a plant.
Thinking back on that time, I’m grateful for the advice my parents always gave me about working hard, admitting what you don’t know and not being afraid to ask for help. Assume the good in people and be prepared to learn from everyone. More often than not, your colleagues and team will help you succeed!

8 年We never stop learning (except when we intentionally choose not to as to ignore information is to ignore opportunities) because not one person no matter what level in life they have achieved does not know everything.
