Good Humor
Dealing with a client who makes bad design choices can be as painful as wearing a t-shirt with a typo. But as designers, we have to soldier on! In the words of famous graphic designer Milton Glaser, "There are three responses to a piece of design – yes, no, and WOW! Wow is the one to aim for." So, if your client is choosing the "no" option, it's up to you to steer them towards the "wow" option. And who knows, maybe their bad choice will end up being the design equivalent of serendipitous collaboration, accidentally mixing peanut butter and chocolate - a surprisingly great combination!
Steven Johnson, author of "Where Good Ideas Come From," writes on serendipitous collaboration,"The trick to having good ideas is not to sit around in glorious isolation and try to think big thoughts. The trick is to get more parts on the table." and “The most productive tool for generating good ideas remains a circle of humans at a table, talking shop.”
Remember to offer alternatives, and keep your focus on creating a successful outcome for both you and your client. Most importantly keep your sense of humor and talk to your friends .
It’s still a thrill to find and deliver creative branded merchandise so my clients can relax knowing their branding is working.
