Good evening from land…
Yes, we have found ourselves a land base for the night worst of the winter days this season. A place to escape when the harbor life is just too much, the cold, wind, rain, swell rocking our watery home at night isn’t always easy when we need to be ready and rested to face the days challenges in our businesses. While we are comfortable and warm, I feel a bit lost in the amount of space as we are used to a perfect 41’ of cozy, compact and functional cabin. The air here is drier and colder and I am already plotting as soon as I am well to go back to the boat when the weather is better in a couple of months.
It is our ‘off season’ as sales dip a bit, and the familiar feeling ‘are we still in business’ creeps in every year at this time as it has for the last 12 seasons.? The winter is hard sometimes, having a seasonal business is challenging to say the least - you still need to keep plenty of inventory on hand and watch last years sales numbers to predict what you think will happen for this season. It doesn’t always work the way you would like. But, I will be hopeful and know that just another 30-60 days we will start to be on track again preparing for our warmer months ahead.?
This time is always good for me as a time to try and reflect on what we have done this past year, what my hopes and dreams are for the coming year and what I can do better to serve my company, customers and suppliers. This will be a big growth year I believe as I have made important strides by becoming debt free, running a profitable and sustainable business, but we are facing many industry challenges with massive price increases on supplies, and currently a lavender supplier’s bad crop. I have a back up supplier (fortunately) but it reminds me of my early days when I had the same thing happen and thought it was the end of the world and my lemonade days. We have been resilient and attribute that to a huge team of people behind me to make it happen every month. They have taught me to believe, to keep going, to try and not be so serious. After all it is just a game - I’m still learning…
Our next bottling is happening near the end of the month and we will run our biggest bottling of lavender in the history of the company - Lavender and Strawberry still have the top spots and the Ginger is a close third.
So wish us luck as all of the supplies arrive to the plant and send extra luck to our 60k labels that are somewhere in the printing process now, then on to fed ex super speedy delivery to arrive on time. (I can’t seem to stay ahead of the label orders these days)
