Are "Good Enough" Conditions Keeping You From Being Brave?

Are "Good Enough" Conditions Keeping You From Being Brave?

I was talking to Mark Gannott the other day.

He's a mover and a shaker in his own right and he mentioned this little concept:

The Region Beta Paradox (RBP).

It's about ambivalence.

It's about the idea that when things are "good enough" or "not so bad" it creates the perfect climactic conditions for us to get complacent and not take action.

The RBP argues that we'd be better off if things were worse.

The RBP says we actually recover fast and better (with more lessons) if we go through more dramatic situations.

Could this be true?

Seriously?

This is so counterintuitive, but I do see the point.

Sometimes I need a shake up. Sometimes I need a hard blow. Sometimes I need some shock. Sometimes I need to rearrange the furniture on the ship.

Especially when comfort is so darn easy to find these days.

I don't wish for anything tragic or traumatic for anyone, so how can we shake things up ourselves?

How can we experience our life from a new angle?

Here are some quick and crazy ideas:

--Close your eyes during yoga

--Wear a string of pearls around your neck all week

--Take a shower in the dark

--Play some Metallica in the morning

--Tape your mouth shut when you sleep

--Abandon your routine for a week

--Walk instead of drive to run an errand

--If you're a talker, say almost nothing during dinner

We like to be in control, so let's shake things up on our own turf.

Let's solve the RBP from our own perspective.

And don't forget to NOTICE (and journal about) what EMERGES....what COMES THROUGH.

What turned out to be a GOOD LIFE SHAKER-UPPER for you?

What started out as a disaster and ended up helping you change?

My big one is in the comments.

Complacency can equal stagnation. It can prevent us from growing! That’s why people end up feeling stuck! The going through the motions of life feeling. I always need to set a goal, an event, a dream out in front of me to keep forward momentum. Great post Andrea L. Enright !

Andrea L. Enright thank you for this shout out! It’s definitely one of my favorite concepts, especially when paired with luck surface area. Life is too short for things to be mediocre, and if you’re settling, you must really think about the insidious dangers of inaction, as Kyla Scanlon (my favorite economst and a fellow Kentuckian) talks about frequently.

I agree Andrea L. Enright. A shake-up can be a necessary calling. Your list of new angle ideas is helpful.

Andrea L. Enright I took a dip in a cold plunge pool yesterday for over 5 mins and when I can't do that I stay in a cold shower for 5 mins. Hate it yet it's a good reset. And I feel so much better. Love your list here. Your post reminds me of homeostasis; we all settle in to our defaults. What if we broke the patterns as you propose?

Thanks Andrea! You pose a great question, Do we grow more from adversity and challenge than not, I would say in my experience, challenges and adversity have helped me grow and develop skills and resources to be wiser and more capable. So I would say yes! I loved the Play Metallica in the morning tip on how to shake things up!
