Good is the Enemy of Great

I remember looking forward to seeing my teachers writing ‘good’ in my homework as a young girl. Nothing gave me more thrill than that. The feeling was only topped by ‘very good’, which also I got once in a while, though not very often. I am sure many of you will relate to this happy childhood feeling. (we didn’t get smilie faces or stars back then)Then life happened, I slowly began to realize that there is more to life than ‘good’ and that there is more to me and my potential than being ‘good’. I realized that life and I have the potential to be GREAT.
Jim Collins opened his book Good to Great with the statement, “Good is the enemy of great.”
Though I must confess, I have not read the book, but when I heard of the quote, randomly someplace, it stopped me dead in my path.
I wondered what took me so long to work this out…
“Oh… I know, I was busy being good”.
John D. Rockefeller said “Don’t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great” because only when we get ourselves out of the comfort zone of good, can we move to be great.
When we settle for ‘good or very good’ as our highest effort, then good becomes the enemy of great. I believe we are made for greatness… each one of us; and the way to get there is to move out of being and accepting ‘good’. And move from #GoodtoGreat. #MyLifeSutra.
Nothing gives me more anxiety and heartburns than this very thought; that I have the potential to be great and that am made for greatness. Because now I keep asking myself, ‘did I give my best, did I do my best, am I being my best’?
To go from good to great we have to get out of our comfort zone. (I have written about it in my previous blogs)
Getting out of the comfort zone is a big challenge, however, before that, I think the bigger challenge is believing we are made for greatness. That we have unlimited potential to do whatever that we set our minds on. No dream is too big to be achieved; provided we believe we can dream big.
At being good we are at best being mediocre. Just like the water that chooses the path of least resistance.
We know, we have far more potential than just being mediocre.
I recently saw a video on how this world is changing by the minute and how AI is coming closer to home every second, (if they are not already there) and how humans, slowly just might be losing their relevance. Unless we humans decide to keep ourselves relevant.
The only way to stay ahead in this game of technology and AI is by going from Good to Great…
Think about it…We are meant for greatness and Good is the enemy of Great.
Until the next time…Wishing you a Good to Great 2019 & Happy Living
